Introduction

Thanks to Jed for hosting us this month and happy birthday to David!

Flight 1 - Starter (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1982 Dr. Loosen Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasted Blind - Nice nose of orange and citrus fruit, warm and welcoming, similar on the palate with forward notes on entry. The backside and finish show an interesting texture that fades into a lengthy finish dominated by grapefruit.
Good – Drink Now

Flight 2 - '82 Bordeaux (2 notes)

Red
1982 Château Piney France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted Blind - Nose shows dark sour cherry and blackberries. Palate is spicy in the middle with a nice forest component and cinnamon. Seems a little tired.
Good – Past Prime
Red
1982 Château Olivier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
flawed
Flawed or past prime

Flight 3 - Aged Tempranillo (1 note)

Red
1986 Bodegas Muga Rioja Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Tasted Blind - Limited notes - Meaty nose with red currant and dust. Very drying on the palate and finish. Probably a little tired.
Average

Flight 4 - Mid-80's Napa Cabs (2 notes)

Red
1986 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted Blind – My WOTN - Terrific blend of red and black fruits interwoven, rich texture with some remaining dusty tannin. Early on the nose and entry I picked up a slight mint note that faded. The fruit is beautifully restrained to display earthy characteristics on the palate and finish. I was a little bit surprised to find this was a Napa cab.
Very Good to Excellent – Drink Now
Red
1984 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted Blind - Sweet, forward nose shows syrupy red fruit, dark berry, sweet baking spices and some unresolved oak. Very ripe and forward palate shows a touch of heat towards the backside. Somewhat flamboyant and new world though its characteristics were probably magnified by the wines that preceded it.
Good to Very Good

Flight 5 - Cabernet Franc - New World and Old World (2 notes)

Red
1990 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Tasted Blind - Nose is showing secondary characteristics of leather mixed in with sappy red fruit. Rather lush on the palate, shows some spice towards the rear and into the finish, where some tannic grip remains. Very elegant.
Very Good – Drink now or Hold
Red
1993 Francis Ford Coppola Cabernet Franc USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
Tasted Blind - Oak and sweet dark fruit on the nose, I did pick up a trace of VA at one point. Very forward and ripe dark fruit with a polished and fine mouthfeel. I was surprised to learn this was cabernet franc as I didn’t notice any leafy or peppery notes.
Good

Flight 6 - Happy birthday to David (1 note)

Red
1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
PnP’d - Barbeque, hickory smoke and sweet black fruit on the nose. I wish I’d spent more time with this as early on the hickory notes overwhelmed the other aromas in the glass. With air this developed a strong shoe leather component, tea and a savory orange rind note towards the backside. Fine tannins still remained evident, particularly on the finish. Very interesting and difficult to judge as this needs to be observed of a number of hours.
