Flight 1 (8 notes)
Red
1991 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch
Dark core, good clarity, larger crimson rim; graham cracker, red currant, dusty, licorice, leather; some tannin and structure, dried red fruit, currant, ripe, good balance; very good and fresh for age 23 (I believe this was recently purchased from Beringer).
Red
1996 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Cloudy dull brick, looks muddy, aged brownish rim; candy cane, spice, pepper, raspberry, light cherry, aged, cranberry; aged and smooth palate, still fresh, sour red fruit finish, olive brine, hard red fruit, some green character, stony; still good but faded after an hour of being open.
Red
2007 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà
See through crimson, duller rim; sulfur, sweet strawberry, floral, pure cherry, rose, young and fresh; some grip, fuller, high acid, more cherry on palate, almost cedar, a little singular; I was on a young Brunello but Rabaja makes sense.
Red
2012 Arnot-Roberts Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard
See through dull maroon; candied, stems, peanut shell, floral, purple, a little foxy, sarsaparilla, artificial grape flavoring, interesting nose; lower acid than Burgundy would be, some of the tannin cut off the finish of the wine; respect producer but not sure about this one, let's see how it develops.
Red
2005 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Bressandes
Good clarity, crimson with paler rim; sulfur dominates, strawberry, darker cherry, young and a little 1-D, somber; meaty red cherry, manly Pinot, sour cherry, somber, almost tinny, tannin, plum skin; wasn't given enough air to develop; I would give this 3+ years at least or a few hours of air; very good.
Red
2005 Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana
Dark core with lighter garnet rim; deep and rich nose, tons of chocolate, currant, spice, cinnamon, menthol, black licorice; sandy and grainy palate, chocolate, currant, expansive, Italian, mean, harsh tannin that completely dry out your mouth; still good but very different from last bottle of this.
Red
2006 Château La Croix St. Georges
Black core with dull garnet rim, some chocolaty color change; sweet leather, dark fruit, some sulfur, licorice, inky, oxblood, floral; fleshy, tilled earth, dark chocolate, sweet leather; called Pomerol.
White
2009 Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
Light yellow green; lemon, shrimp shell, seawater, white flowers; not much fat on the palate, lean especially for vintage, lots of lemon and granny smith apple, salty, tidal pool, saliva inducing finish; not getting much nobility but very tasty.
Closing
Some impressive wines on paper. Nothing that really wowed, but the older wines did surprise.
