Tasting at Mauritson Winery, Dry Creek

Mauritson Winery

Tasted February 7, 2015 by MRichman with 300 views

Introduction

Overall style is restrained, somewhat old world and sometimes a bit stiff. Most of what I tasted was from 2012 and the few from 2013 seemed to have a more open, sweeter style. Not sure if that is vintage variation or just a product of each wine. Some things to like here.

Nice tasting room, generously poured through a lot of wines.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2013 Mauritson Wines Chardonnay Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
Dry, yeasty, broad with a wide finish and a bit of oak (wild yeast?). Just a little flat, stiff. Old school.
Red
2012 Mauritson Wines Pinot Noir Charlie Clay Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Light with tight tannin, red cherry fruit but more dark than bright. A little stiff with stemmy tannins.
Red
2012 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Zinfandel Westphall Ridge Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Purple fruit, black smoky oak tannins, licorice. Long black, bitter finish and a bit hot. Not heavy. A restrained style. Good but could use a little more polish.

Red
2012 Mauritson Wines Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Smooth, silky with some acid and just a touch of sweetness. Black character, soft texture, some tar. Very good and full of class. My favorite of the zins.
Red
2011 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Syrah Madrone Spring Vineyards USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Bacon, smoke, a little barnyard. Fat, smooth. Black licorice. Long bitter finish. Dirt. Good, a bit stiff.
Red
2012 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Zinfandel Pritchett Peaks Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
A bit tight with strong purple fruit. Black, bitter finish. Tar and licorice. Walnut. Young. Med weight. Restrained.
Red
2013 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Zinfandel Uncle's Block USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Medium red cherry and strawberry. Silkier than some of the others. Smoky with some tar, nice balance. One of the best built wines of the tasting. A little perfume and flowers. Very good.
Red
2013 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Zinfandel Rockpile Ridge Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Silky & smooth. A bit of blueberry and sap in the middle. Just a little sweet for me. This was the one wine of the tasting that I felt crossed the line.
Red
2012 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Cabernet Franc Buck Pasture Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Purple fruit with tar, smoke, black licorice. Long bitter finish, fine oaky tannins, some herb, pepper. Good.
Red
2011 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Cabernet Sauvignon Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Rockpile USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Good solid fruit, a bit stiff. Herbs and smoky tight black tannins. Olive. Medium weight. Good.

Black, tight, licorice and bitter smoky fine tannins. Hint of blueberry. Nicely built and balanced. Very good, this will age well.
