Introduction

whiner organized this event when I was visiting the west coast.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
1995 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Aromas of yeast, lemon, biscuit, and apple. Medium-bodied, nose following through to the palate. Moderate finish, 30-35s, with apple and lemon notes. Will improve with cellaring.
Red
2001 Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Open and allowed to Audouze for 24 hours. Dark ruby/black colour; opaque at the centre. Aromas of tar, blackcurrant, licorice, plums, and earth. Medium-full bodied, tannic, with mint and dark fruit. Still restrained. Dry, moderate finish, 30s, a little puckering, with dark fruit. Obviously too young, but a treat to try. Bury it in the cellar, as it will improve substantially.
Red
1998 Michele Castellani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico i Castei Campo Casalin Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
91 points
Dark purple/black colour. Aromas of chocolate, raisins, prunes, and dried cherries. Medium-full bodied, with replays from nose and some nuts as well. Moderate finish, 35s.
White - Off-dry
1985 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
Aromas of petrol, white flowers, jasmine, and lanolin. Medium-bodied, with notes of lanolin, flowers, petrol, lemon, and pear. Moderate finish, 30s, with white fruit.
