This is clearly the ripest and darkest wine in the group. It has the most concentration and the densest fruit, impressive really, with just enough of a meaty, peppery edge to make it interesting. But as it sits in the glass it gets a little spirity and the tannins are kind of chalky. Lovely long purple fruit finish though.

Extremely stemmy, and the stems are underripe, so they present as a green minty character that overwhelms the fruit. The rest of the wine is nice -- savory, meaty, silky tannin -- but the stems are so strong that it's hard to get past them. And they're not the pretty floral kind either. I don't loathe green stem character in Syrah, so I found the wine ok, but those who really don't like stems actively disliked this.

The most translucent and bricked in color. Some autumnal fruit on the nose, some earth and bacon character, completely resolved, but this lacks fruit in the mouth and is really quite sour. A little better with food, with helps cut the acidity in the midpalate, but that merely makes the wine palatable rather than interesting, and the finish is still tart and short. This is fading and tastes like it should have been drunk up five years ago.

This is a nice wine, although not spectacular or anything. Still plenty of dark fruit, lots of peppery/meaty/savory character, tannins are silky and friendly, enough acidity but not drying out. Quite nice.

Closing

At the end of the night we tried blending the four wines together, and the blend was significantly better than any of the wines was on its own.
