Introduction

All 2012s except for one 2013, tasted single blind.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
2012 Lange Pinot Noir Reserve Lange Estate Vineyard Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
88 points
Medium ruby colored. Aromas of tart wild red berries and a mix of mushroom, tilled soil and chewing tobacco. Medium-bodied, light tannic structure and some moderately tart acid. The wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry fruit is tart and bright yet rich and showing a saucy, spicy mix of tobacco, mushroom, rich soil, toasted oak and cedar. Bright and fresh yet savory and showing some sweet cola and clove notes on the finish. Definitely ready to drink now, but I’d like to taste it again in a year or two to see where the non-fruit complexity goes. A blend from their Dundee Hills Estate vineyard and the Freedom Hill Vineyard, the wines sees 35% new French oak.

2012 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
86 points
Light ruby colored. Bright, juicy strawberries and red cherries on the nose, some sweet roses and violets, some earth and rocky notes. Juicy and fleshy palate, smooth tannins, medium acid. The red and black plum and cherry fruit is velvety and rich, dashed with sweet cola, roses, mocha and vanilla, some earthy, dusty elements as well. Fruity, ready to drink. 13.3% alcohol, aged in French oak for 11 months, 35% new.
Red
2012 Chehalem Pinot Noir Reserve Ridgecrest Vineyards USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
89 points
Deep ruby colored. Nose of juicy black cherries and crushed plums, violets, sweet coffee, vanilla, wet earth. Medium+ bodied, with fleshy, chewy tannins and medium acid. Black cherries, summer plums, blackberries, tossed together with dried violets, vanilla, cedar and some moss and wet earth. Cola, sweet coffee, dark chocolate tones woven in. Chewy, rich, a bit more full-throttle and toasty than some of the others, but lots to like. I’d like to cellar this for three or four years. 11 months in 42% new oak. Spring hail cut the crop in half and seems to have led to a very concentrated wine, so definitely seek out if you like a more exuberant Pinot.

2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Juicy ruby color. Nose shows deep black cherries, rich plums, along with violets, vanilla, cedar, but also some nuance savory elements. A full-bodied wine with velvety tannins, medium acid and an overall creamy, rich feel. Red and black plums and cherries, the fruit is rich but not overdone. Toast and clove mix with fallen leaves, mushroom and earth. Warm, ripe yet showing some subtlety, length and complexity. I think this could open up over the next few years. A fuller style (14.5% alcohol), aged 16 months in 28% new French oak.

2012 Cooper Mountain Vineyards Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
86 points
Bright ruby color. Nose of red cherries, currants, mixed together with bright red flowers and an interesting herbal kick. Fresh acid, medium-light tannins, bright red cherries, red currants, tangy but smooth fruit. Some tobacco, spiced coffee, roses, potpourri, some cherry wood and fallen leaves. Lively, crisp and clean. Drinking nicely right out of the bottle, great for early drinking. A blend of four estate vineyards, aged in 20% new French oak.

2012 Erath Pinot Noir Prince Hill USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
89 points
Light cherry-ruby color. Fresh and elegant but a whole lot of red fruit (cherries, wild raspberries and cherries) hints of eucalyptus, roses and lavender. Medium-bodied on the palate, bright and crisp acid, soft tannins, very approachable. Raspberry, strawberry and red plum fruit is tangy yet juicy with hints of cedar, eucalyptus, cola, rose potpourri, light roast coffee. A sweet-savory spice element woven in well. Seems like one to drink in the near term, but very pretty stuff. Aged 12 months in French oak, 40% new.
Red
2012 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Elizabeth's Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains
90 points
Medium ruby color. Needs time to open up aromatically, a bit compact but starts to show red cherries, strawberry rhubarb pie, loam, clove and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium+ bodied, smooth tannins, medium acid. Black cherries, dark plums and raspberries, the fruit is velvety and rich but has a tart streak as well. Notes of loam and dusty soil mix with toasted nuts, roasted coffee and black cherry cola. A rich wine but still maintains freshness, although I think I’d cellar this for a few years and let it unwind. Aged in 31% new French oak.

2012 Rex Hill Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
87 points
Medium ruby color. Aromas of deep black cherries, crushed red and black plums, violets, roses, potting soil, rhubarb, some light roast coffee. Medium+ boded, tangy acid keeps it refreshing, fine tannins. Juicy black cherries, all sorts of plums, some raspberry jam. Roses, potting soil mixed with cedar, cherry wood, roasted coffee and pine nuts. Fleshy but not overdone on the palate. Ready to drink or cellar for near term. Aged 14 months in 28% new French oak. 14% alcohol.
Red
2012 Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Light-medium ruby colored. Vibrant and tangy red fruit on the nose (currants, strawberries and raspberries) topped with a significant dose of complex herbal notes (dill pickle, pepper, tobacco), hints of rose hips. Medium-full bodied with some dusty tannins of moderate strength, the acid keeps it slick. Flavors of red cherries, wild strawberries and black cherries…. The earthy/herbal notes (pepper, pickle, wet soil, moss) are delicious and woven in well with the juicy fruit. Notes of cedar, mocha and root beer, too. Complex, lots to show, long finish, could develop significantly more complexity over the next three or four years. 16 months in 40% new French oak.

2012 Broadley Vineyards Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pale ruby colored. Much more tart and floral than some of the other offerings, I get sour cherries, tart cranberries and red apple peels, laced with roses and some sweet red licorice. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and refreshing acid. The fruit is crisp and crunchy but offers plenty of juicy ripeness (red cherries, strawberry, raspberry jam, red apple peel). Lovely mix of pipe tobacco, dark chocolate shavings, clove and white pepper, lots of earthy notes to unpack. Such a silky and creamy wine but plenty of cut and depth as well. 15% new oak, 13.5% alcohol. What a great value for $25.
