Introduction

Six of us gathered for dinner at Acqua to make some new wine friends along with introductions and Champagne/Apps at Beckys beforehand and dessert after.

Flight 1 - Champagne and Apps (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Veuve Doussot Champagne Ernestine Millesime France, Champagne
91 points
Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. I was quite pleased with this little number. Very solid, and I'm glad I have a stash of them. The nose has a lot of green apple, nutty, almond, yeasty, minerals. The palate is medium bodied, nice crispness, green apple, pear, almond, yeasty, slightly chalky minerality. Good length and quite bright. Drinks well already.
White - Sparkling
N.V. G. H. Mumm & Cie Champagne Mumm de Cramant France, Champagne
90 points
Light medium gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. Much bigger and heavier than the Ernestine, very toasted on the nose and palate, toasty, brioche, full body, baked pear, autolytic, yeasty with some earthiness, medium length. Larger bubbles.

Flight 2 - Dinner Wines (4 notes)

White
2012 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. On a very hot humid evening with dinner by the lake, this lost its chill fairly quickly, yet held up well and drank wonderfully. Nice aromas of melon, lemon, creme brulee, light oak. The palate is nicely textured and round, full bodied, elegant, melon, lemon, citrus zest, lemon custard, hints of pineapple, good acid and a long finish. Balanced, very good.
Red
2010 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Mount Carmel USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
90 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. The nose shows sour cherry, cranberry, sous bois, spicy, a little raspberry. The palate is big, full bodied for pinot, sour cherry, tart raspberry, cranberry, spicy, briary, oak. Good but a bit less refined and rather big. 90+pts.
Red
2008 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Momtazi Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville
91 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour and again on day 2. Lovely dried earth and soil aromas, dark fruit berry fruit, crushed berries, a hint of blue fruit. The palate is medium bodied, layered dark fruits, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, dense, wood, spices, gravelly earth, and a little heat on the end of a medium finish.

Red
2008 La Rioja Alta Rioja ViƱa Alberdi Crianza Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
89 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was youthful with plenty of new oak showing, tons of anise, and plenty of blackberry and cassis, along with a pleasantly earthy core. This needs several years and plenty of air currently. 89(+?)pts.

Flight 3 - Dessert (1 note)

Red - Fortified
2003 Gould Campbell Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
90 points
Purple red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes, Very dark blackberry fruit, maybe a bit of black raspberry, anise, spice, oak, medium tannins, medium sweetness.
