A lot of wines (Raj's Birthday)

Cleveland Heights

Tasted September 25, 2015 - September 26, 2015 by Loren Sonkin with 456 views

Introduction

On Thursday, my wife and I were invited to help a local restaurateur celebrate his birthday. There was plenty of great food, conversation and, of course, wines. Everyone brought wines, but since this was primarily a celebration of Raj's friends, their were wines of all levels or quality and price. I tried to sample all I could, but arriving late I did miss a few. You see, first, we had to attend a local neighborhood wine get together. The first few wines were opened there.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

2012 Grgich Hills Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley

I suspect this was better a year or two ago. Its very good, but doesn't have the raciness I might like to see. Light gold in color. The nose is clean. Minerals and slight peaches. On the palate, this is round. More minerals than fruit. Dry. Solid wine and enjoyable.

This had been decanted for a bit. Purple in color. The nose is nice and not as oak driven as I remember this wine being. Its been a while since I had on this young and my first time trying this vintage. There is some oak, also some black cherries and black raspberries and a bit of charred wood. On the palate, very tight. nice dark cherry fruit. Firm tannins. Some vanilla. The future is bright here. This does seem to be more accessible than I remember these being.

2012 Conte di Bregonzo Amarone della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

Purple/ruby in color. The nose is nice with dark cherries and some oak. Nothing raisined here. Full bodied. On the palate, there is nice dark cherry fruit. Some heat on the finish. Nothing screaming Amarone as opposed to Valpolicella though. Nice finish. Easy drinking. It is fine and enjoyable. Not sure it will be a long ager.

This bottle was tired and old. I am sure it was better a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, it had some interesting moments and was worth tasting. Ruby in color. The nose is dusty with slight dried cherries. Slight layering on the palate. The acidity is a bit too pronounced at this point, but was probably in balance earlier in life. The owners had designated this bottle as OTBN (open that bottle night), so I am sure they thought this a special bottle which was great appreciated. I would have liked to try it in around 2010.

2001 Kongsgaard Syrah Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

Drinking very well, I would say about at peak but no hurry. Purple in color. The nose is meaty with black raspberries. Great balance. Lovely black fruit. Slight tannins. Layers of earth intertwined. Nice texture. Not a profound wine as some Kongsgard wines can be, but still outstanding. And delicious!

2007 Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley

Nice showing. Purple in color. The nose has nice cassis, bit of vanilla. Clean on the palate. Ripe black currant fruit. Mild tannins. Some complexity. Very tasty wine showing a bit of complexity. Nice finish. Pretty classic $20 Napa Cab.

From a 3L bottle. Ruby/purple in color. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the nose is. Nice cassis, bit of char and slight dust. On the palate, this is slightly tannic. Nice cassis fruit. Still seems tight, but 95's will take a long time to come around. That said, this is quite enjoyable right now. No harm in opening. I wonder how other formats would be.

I wonder how this was a decade ago. It doesn't drink old, but it doesn't have what I might want from this wine in this vintage either. Purple in color. The nose is dusty with slight purple-ish fruit and slight vegetal notes. Medium bodied. Not much fruit left and no tannins left. No complexity at this point. Its not bad, its just there isn't a lot going on at this point. Move on.

Very surprising showing IMO for this Merlot based Bordeaux blend. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is really nice. Cherries, cigar box, cassis and slight earthiness. On the palate, the fruit is very much alive. This drinks like older right bank wines (and certainly better than almost all 92 right bankers at this point). Layers of complexity. Nice cherry fruit. Earthy funk. Nice balance. One would assume past peak, this must have been some wine a few years back. Its still outstanding.

2012 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley

Sometimes, this gets overlooked when talking about this winery. Very nice showing, and while this is not cheap, there is still some room for improvement. The 2012's are so soft and accessible that some think they won't develop. I disagree but time will tell. Right now, this is purple in color. The nose is classic Napa; cassis, vanilla, slight fresh oak and slightly sweet. On the palate, easy ripe cassis fruit. Lovely texture. Mild tannins. Some depth. Just a delicious glass of wine.

2009 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Ruby in color. The nose is feminine with pretty perfumed cherries, rhubarb and a slight funk. On the palate, this has settled into a nice layered complexity. Good texture. A balanced acidity. Not yet at peak, but not a kid either. Very pretty showing for a Cal Pinot.

1999 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia

Great showing as this wine starts to show hints at maturity. Not there yet, but getting closer. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, slight roasted meats, slight floral notes, black pepper and slight herbal note. On the palate, great texture. Starting to show layers of black raspberries, roasted meats and charred earth. Great balance. Best showing yet for this vintage. Good bottle or coming around?

Not sure where this came from. Generic red wine that is past prime. Drinkable? Sure. But why bother? Hopefully, this was not very expensive. I would guess it was made to be drunk up in the first year. A nose of dust and red berries. On the palate, light bodied. Just some red wine flavors. No weight. No finish. Nothing really off either though.

2007 Stormy Weather Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley

I don't know this wine, but it is really good. This is big and fruity and in prime drinking window for that style. I think it has years left and it gets more reserved. Purple in color. The nose is big with black raspberries, blueberries, violets, menthol and espresso. Full bodied. Juicy acidity. Medium tannins. Loads of cassis fruit on the palate. Long finish. Just a lovely wine that despite a lot of wines, really showed well.

1995 Luciano Bruni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This was good. Apparently offered off the list, but I am unsure of the cost. Ruby/brown in color. The nose has dust, cherries, dried cherries and tea. On the palate, this has a nice complexity. Tannins completely resolved. Slight amount of cherry fruit left, but mostly dried cherries. nice finish.

Closing

Good time.
