Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2001 Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Kabinett Germany, Pfalz
95 points
Ridiculous wine. Electric, youthful and absolutely piercing, with laser-like acids, bright apple and citrus notes and incredible chalky/stony notes. Lip pursing acidity and outstanding length. Still quite youthful for a 14 year old kabinett, with no signs of the fruit drying out and absolutely no petrol notes. Why oh why did I not buy more on release when I could have bought this for $11.
White - Off-dry
2001 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheingau
flawed
Slight TCA on the nose, although the palate was much better, with a rich, almost Auslese-like, texture. Tropical and exotic, but unfortunately TCA-tinged.
Red
1986 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
This wine could be immortal. At almost 30 years of age the color is still dark red with only a hint of ruby on the edge. Deep wine, and with currants, plums, licorice, iron and a hint of leather. Dense and still structured with outstanding breadth and length. So much wine here and so much more time to go.

flawed
An unfortunate combination of being oxidized and corked.
Red
1970 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Perhaps not a perfect bottle, but this offered up a good amount of elegant, silky, smooth, aged-claret flavors. Nice notes of dried currants, cedar and leather, but not a lot of persistence.
Red
1985 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
92 points
Classic mature Northern Rhone flavors of dried flowers, olives and savory dried meats. The tannins are well resolved on this pretty, velvety, well lifted wine. Probably time to drink up on this one.
