White
1972 Caves São João Dão Porta dos Cavaleiros Branco Portugal, Beiras, Dão
86 points
40% Cercial and 20% each of Bical, Malvasia and Encruzado. Open top fermentation, 24 months in cement tanks. Certainly old school wine. Light, rather transparant colour given the age. A bit woody nose, also fenugreek, pineapple and wormwood in the bouquet. Somehat rustic on the palate, gets milky with time. A nice enough, pleasant wine, it was nicely compared to Winnie-the-Pooh as a friendly, nice character.

2009 Gaja Barolo Dagromis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Initially feek of a young and woody NW style red. Juicy, cranberries in powdered sugar, dark fruits, dried fruits, prunes, suede like forest floor. Biting tannin, covers all mouth. Nose is not yet as open as one would like. Excellent, but surely one should wait on this wine.
Red
2010 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Initially gasoline and menthol, dense and concentrated cherry-aronia (black chokeberries). Firm palate, juicy and dense as well, ripe gooseberries (!). Currently quite drying and tight but nevertheless so classy and eminently likealble. Excellent wine even despite its young age.

Poignantly-dry, ceder and red berries. Seems traditional with its mighty structure. Primary fruits have gone, there remains softness of roses and something metallic.
Red
1978 Gemma Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

As far as I know, forst ever vintage of Gemma Barolo. Certainly old school by the looks of it. Lots and lots of very fine sediment that has to be separated by keeping the bottle upright for two weeks and decanting it off it. Quite clear colour, certainly more brickish than the rest of the wines in the tasting. High accidity, even pearcing, I wonder if this wine is ready now. Red currants and tar, red cherries. Long and lean on the palate. Develops nice notes of parsley. It was ok, but lost in comparison to some younger, more powerful barolos. Another issue might be that it wasn't given enough aeration time, which, for such a vintage is crucial.
Red
2001 Rivetto Nebbiolo d'Alba Lirano Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Nebbiolo d'Alba
89 points
Perfect balance, soft notes of tar, mild and resolved feeling to it. Much softer than all the Barolos we had on that evening. Pleasant fruitiness, but has this dry heat on the finish. Silent but pretty, doesn't have this in your face wow factor.
Red
1983 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Meaty, rather full taste, lots of barnyard, tannin on the back palate. So youtfull and solid, pure pleasure and enjoyment. Excellent.
Red
1974 Guasti Clemente Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Lovely meatiness, mushrooms, soft, herbal-parsley. Classy and excellent. Completely resolved but not dying.
Red
1985 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
No formal notes, but this was one of the best wines of the night.
White
2008 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
89 points
Oaky, chicken broth, quite complex, but I didn't liek that chalky rag feel that it had. Much fatter than Raveneau. Lots of exotic fruits, seemed vulgar and edgy in its profile. Lacks elegance if you ask me. May be it is just a phase though.
White - Off-dry
1972 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Blanco Semi Dulce Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
87 points
Deepish, golden yellow colour. Mushroomy nose initially but with time it somewhat blows off and more candied fruits, candied pear, quince and overripe peach remain. Off-dry on the palate not unlike some older rieslings, but in a different, not as clean a way. An interesting wine and a thing of the past. You will hardly find any off-dry wines in Rioja now.
