Tasted February 13, 2016 by cab blends with 334 views

Introduction

A mixed bag of wines tasted blind tonight. Scores always tend to be a few points lower with the formal scoring sheets. All wines were decanted for 2 hours.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2002 Peter Lehmann Clancy's Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
81 points
Light brown tinge on the edges. Light tannins at 6/10.

A short dry finish.
Red
2013 Familia Nueva Cabernet Sauvignon Liberté USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
86 points
Dark purple red and I thought this looks more like carmenere than cabernet. Fruity guava nose with tobacco and cherry. A steely clean rock palate with the fruitiness.

Tannins are 7/10.
Red
1998 Bolla Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
83 points
Very distinctive brown tinge with moss and pencil shavings on the nose. Also a hint of marmite.

Dry and smooth though thinning.
Red
2012 Rustenberg John X Merriman South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
88 points
Dark red with a light chalk nose.

Medium to full body.
