1999 and 2003 Jadot Burgundies

Introduction
The local importer and the Jadot export officer presentede a really lovely tasting event on a snowy cold evening. The ability to try the 2003 vintage was great, and then to be able to see where the 1999's are, and show what time in bottle does to burgundy was educational.
We also tasted the 2003 whites, and while my notes are poor, I will say the Santenay Clos des Malte was a standout. But from the Savigny les Guettes, Chassagne Village, Puligny Champs Gain, Meursault-Charmes to the Corton Charlemagne, I noticed a lake of acidity and a very short finish. There was no keenness to the intensity. I am not a white burgundy buyer in general, and none of these are no my list.
The 2003 reds were different for sure. The fruit was unbeliveable, California like with very creamy mouthfeel. But I do not think the wines will age (but what do I know, the importer and the agent said the same thing!!) I am going to take a pass, at least at these prices. There may be some truely great wines made, but I would need to be convinced that the underpinnings, the tannis and acids, are hidden somewhere in the fruit. I am not convinced today.

Red
2003 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Clos de la Commaraine
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Again this has even more candy fruit, with a bit of structure. I sense something burnt here, and really am not sure what else many show later. I still find a lack of balance, but the silkyness of the fruit is hard to explain, something I certainly am not used to. New World??
Red
2003 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
OK, now this has more of a package here. The fruit is outragous, just like the other 03's, but there is a bit of a back end here, with even a hint of a tannin. Much more balanced, and if this is any indications, a step up from this may yeild a great wine. But this is still $100, so I'm not convinced.
Red
2003 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
As expected, this is the wine of the 03 tasting. The fruit is the typical cloves and red fruit, probably more dense than usual. I did sense a bit of heat here as well. There are tannins, but they are very soft and almost hidden. This wine may evolve, but I am just not sure. And at $185, what, only a 70% price increase! If these wine keep the fruit, they may develop and be good, but will they last? I am not qualified to know, but they will provide very good early drinking.

The 1999's are what I like in burgundy. They have great fruit (well, for a normal vintage not 2003?), some are out of the "dumb" shell, they will last a long time and with the tannins and acids supporting them. The fruit flavours are also attractive, with black fruit and tea leaves, even tobacco. I am glad I own many from this year.
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
the nose of this wine is great, forest floor and great black fruit Wow, it is going on tonight both times. taste us very elegant, wonderful mouth feel and a taste of Beaune fruit and black maple syrup. tannis grip the mouth and hold the wine up well to a nice finish. try again in 5+ years, and will last longer. I think I want to own the wine for 48.50.
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
First taste: the wine was elegant, full of cloves and red fruit, just a wonderful drink, good length. I loved it Ready to go now. But on the second taste - it fell down and did not show against the bigger wines. If you have it, try a bottle, as these samples were ready to go.
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots Domaine Gagey
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
skinny note here, I really did not like it. much more harsh than the other wines, with tannic dark fruit. the soil comes through. But as a 99, this is a very concentrated terroir driven wine that will likely be very good with another 5 years. Just not for me
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes Domaine Gagey
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
plush full nose of spices, really elegant leaves and black fruit. wow, a very balanced fruit attack with moderate length and plush sweet hidden tannins - start to drink in 3 to 5 years I would guess. this is a very balanced wine, just missing some grip for $100
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Clos Poutures
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
v dark colour, lovely nose of tobacco, the best pommard that I have ever had at one of these tastings, I guess it needs the time. It is strong and winey like a bordeaux. It has an excellent deep flavor profile of black fruit. Good length. Yum! But $84???
Red
1999 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
this wine was compact and closed tonight. It may have suffered from shipping. the nose was closed, and on the palette a very cherry fruited spicy flavour profile emerges. the finsh is not exceptionally long and the silky mouthfeel was not evident. If you told me the Savigny and the Gevery got mixed up, I would believe it. But I own some and it will be good, just keep it for later. Both tastes were consistent.
