Introduction

A superb collection of stellar wines perfectly paired with classical Piedmont dishes. My gratitude to Zachys for organizing this unique event and to Emanuele Graetz for his passionate and knowledgeable exposition of Roberto Voerzio's wines and the wine making philosophy.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2006 Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Nature Cuvée Starck France, Champagne
More round and yeasty, with a nice aromatics of brioche and gold apples. Not as tart as I remember this wine from a recent tasting, more luxurious.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
2012 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Muted nose. Coiled and tight now, with a hint of sweet sap and spicy undertones. Of the wines in the '12 line up, shows most of the '
wild', forest and soil flavors. The wine gives only glimpses now of the tightly packed aromas. Suspect this one may take longer to unfurl.
Red
2012 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Darker in color than Cerequio and more expressive now. Taste of sweet black cherry and a tarry, smoky accent on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is more diffuse, even elegant, though tannins became more apparent with air. Hint of cedar; a more masculine expression of nebbiolo.
Red
2012 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
A very approachable Barolo, but came off as the simpler wine of the line-up. Packed with flavors, layered wine, showing sweet plum, tea, strawberry jam, clay. Measured, but lacked tension now.
Red
2012 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Sarmassa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From a magnum. A gorgeous wine, so much going on. Voluptuous and sexy, sweetness of wild blue fruits mixed with a hint of tar and crushed dried petal. Mineral feel overall, with a velvety texture and concentrated refined aromatics. An absolute favorite of the '12s. Tannins became more apparent with air and food -- has some teeth as well as beauty.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Torriglione Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From a 3L bottle. A dark, brooding wine, color of dark cherry. Complex aroma of earth, dark fruit. Menthol and cherry, sap, strong earthy accent. Finished surprisingly short at first but opened up quite a bit through out the evening. Plenty of tannins still felt now, can easily wait another 5+ years.
Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
Tasted blind, next to '04 Rocche dell'Annunziata. Softer yet more acidic feel, baked cranberry tart, citrus, red fruit, earth. Fully integrated and delicious. Took for an older, more acidic Barolo, say '98 La Serra, but missing ultimately that spicy nebbiolo complexity.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2003 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati Case Nere Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Liked this wine a lot. Tasted it with the remaining '04 Rocce pour. Sweeter and less earthy than Rocce, quite dark and very complex. Layers of sweet cherry liquor, well integrated wood, menthol, dark cola. Goes on for minutes. Outstanding now, should continue to improve.
Red
2005 Roberto Voerzio Langhe Merlot Fontanazza - Pissotta Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Served blind. Fleshy plums, violets, hint of wood, ripe red fruit. Less acidic and volatile profile. Merlot is well aged and shows some evolved complexity. Not quite the complexity of Messorio, but quite good.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1989 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Elegant and refined wine. Plenty of fruit left, with fully integrated tannins, silky. Mostly reduced red berries on the palate, still complex. Drinking perfectly now.
