Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
1988 Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Not an especially complex wine, but a very pretty one that was very easy to drink. Gentle red berried fruit framed by mature earthy and mushroom flavours, conveyed on a light, delicate frame. Very nice.
Red
1988 Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

I liked this a lot more than the Burguet (though there were some divided opinions at the table) - the fruit's a bit tired at first but freshens up with air, and there's a lot of complexity here with an array of spicy, earthy, floral, and slightly funky leathery notes emerging with time. Polished and very graceful on the palate with the tannins mostly integrated, and bright acids beneath.
Red
2001 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Really good. Bright, sappy red fruit with spicy, faintly herbal (stemmy?), and more savoury earthy accents, all conveyed with a finessed touch on a medium weight frame.
Red
2000 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

My favourite of the Burgs. There's some leathery, almost meaty funk here amidst an array of savoury earth, red and dark fruited flavours, and a palate that combines intensity and power with a lightness of touch and finesse that makes this very easy to drink.
Red
2008 Rhys Syrah Horseshoe Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Nope, not a fan of this. Bright, ripe red and dark fruit with a slightly bitter tree bark element, but the acidity feels a bit disjointed and gives it a slight citric tang on the finish that I found offputting, with some hard tannin also showing on the back end.

Red
2005 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos du Chêne Vert France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Lovely on its own, and absolutely fantastic with the shredded beef with green pepper. This is drinking beautifully now with a core of dark fruit that's still very fresh and vibrant, but also showing some floral, herbal, and developed savoury complexity around the fruit. Light on its feet with plenty of acid giving it lift, and so easy to drink.
White - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne

A Champagne to bring peace among worlds. This is just awesome. Powerful with lots of ripe citrus and apple fruit framed by bready and doughy flavours, vanilla cream, and a chalky mineral element that emerges with more air. A big wine but very well balanced with plenty of acidity.

White
2010 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Didn't give this as much attention as I should have with a lot of other really great wines on the table, but this was very good. Bright, zippy, very lively Kabinett that only slightly suffers from pradikat creep. Lots of fresh citrus and green apple fruit here tinged with some herbal and floral notes with a bright acid spine beneath. One of the better balanced 2010s I've had lately.

1990 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

After two bottles from the same lot that were rather advanced and tired, this was a very pleasant surprise. A much fresher showing more in line with what I expect from Prüm with lots of ripe orchard fruit and floral notes accented with mature smoky, burnished, and petrol notes. There's a fair bit of sweetness here on the palate, but it's nicely balanced by the acids beneath. Very nice.

1994 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese **** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Not quite the jawdropper that my last bottle was, but still damn good. Very complex with an array of honey, flowers, spice, and greener herbal notes around a core of ripe peach and citrus fruits. This comes across only moderately sweet with powerful acidity beneath, but it doesn't quite have the sense of seamlessness and finesse that my last bottle did.

A remarkably understated and delicate Auslese. Beautiful aromatics with an array of honey, tropical and citrus fruits, floral notes, smokiness, and some of that Prum sulfur and sponti yeast funk all coming together into an amazing scent, and a palate that shows the power and intensity I'd expect from a GK, but also amazing lightness and finesse thanks to the powerful acidity beneath. Fantastic wine.

2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 'Rotlay' Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Just a fantastic bottle of Auslese with an array of fruit ranging from more classic citrus and apple to riper melon and tropical flavours, bright florality, honey, and a vivid slatey minerality beneath. Becomes more fragrant and complex with air, and the balance is impeccable with the intensity and sweetness on the palate balanced by the acidity. Thanks Rich.
