Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
1997 Venge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Coravin 6/24/16: Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose is aromatic, plenty of blackcurrant fruit, spice, cedar; palate is full bodied, tannins still have moderate presence but with fruit, ripe blackberry, medium alcohol, fresh medium acid; medium length finish. Well balanced traditionally made Cabernet but with plenty of juicy black fruit present. A pleasure to drink, and ready now. 92-93
Day 2: same, excellent.
Red
1978 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barbaresco Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
Durand, decanted off sediment. Red topped (original release). Color is light to medium ruby with bricking at rims appropriate for age; nose is aromatic with plenty of sous bois, mushrooms, undercurrant of blackberry, tertiary; palate is high acid, tannins well integrated, medium alcohol, some tangy remnants of red cherry fruit, savory; medium finish. Definitely a treat to try, and it continues to have excellent freshness/acidity, balance, and elegance with nose>palate in quality, though it didn't blow me away. 91
2 hours air: Improved integration, seems to flow better from one flavor to the next. Remarkably enjoyable and an excellent example of aged nebbiolo. 92-93
6 hours air: Even more aromatic than before with more funk, more tar, starting to develop a bit of decaying roses/floral; palate is still fresh, high acid, well balanced; medium finish. This keeps improving with more and more air. Now this is starting to be worth its asking price of ~$130. 93-94
White
2004 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
94 points
Deep golden-yellow color; nose is moderately aromatic with creamy aromas, slight butterscotch, slight popcorn; palate is full bodied, superb medium-plus acidity, creamy texture without being heavy, slight limey tartness; medium-plus finish. This has developed a bit since I last tried it in 2012, but it retains vibrant acidity and superb balance. One bottle left, and I'll try to get to it in the next 1-2 years. 93-94
With air the nose starts to show some of the lime minerality in addition to the creaminess. Great combo of flavors. 93-94
