Flight 1 - WHITES (5 notes)

White
1995 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Loved this... dryish, crisp, citric and stoney. Some apple, orange oil and ginger pokes through, but this is mostly about citric minerality. My kind of Kabinett.
White - Off-dry
1975 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Dark in color, still clinging to some (light) fruit notes... dried peaches, bruised apples and some apricot notes. The acids are there, but not as precise as i would like it. While this past peak, with the fruit starting to fade, there is a lot to like here. I would opt to drink this sooner rather than later.
White - Off-dry
1983 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
It is interesting to read the other notes on this wine, with mention of the dark color and advanced taste. This bottle was in great shape; excellent fill, good cork and a surprising light color. The flavors were explosive with fresh tropical fruits, baked apple and spices. Nice slate notes come in late. Superb acids. I find this particular bottle quite young and regret opening it so soon.
White - Off-dry
1983 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 125 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
I got to this wine late, but others noted that this might be corked when first opened. By the time I got to it, I did detect some funk, but not any of that distinct "wet cardboard" note I get from TCA. This seemed a bit muted, but got better with air... much better. The length was good, but not especially memorable. A good wine, but perhaps not what it should be. Judgment withheld.

Flight 2 - REDS (3 notes)

Red
1934 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Reserva Velho Portugal, Lisboa, Colares
94 points
Recorked, but not recently; the cork looked about 15 years old? Not quite as mind-blowing as my last bottle, but still stellar, especially for its age. Ridiculously dark red center with some bricking on the edge. Doesn't Romisco ever lose its color? Lovely nose of dried flowers, coffee, earth and leather. Flavors follow through on the palate with some crushed stones on the lifted, crisp finish. I took a sample home for tasting the next day and it was still going strong. Amazing stuff.
Red
1985 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
97 points
Holy cow this was good. This was double decanted for four hours, and it needed it. When I got to it, there was still some structure, but it was so fine-grained and silky. The fragrance was so opulent yet pure, with dried cherries, tar, cloves and earth. Lots of weight on the palate, but lifted and bright, no sense of heaviness while drinking this. The finish was long and lip-smacking. This gorgeous wine is what we all hope Burgundy morphs into... my wine of the night.
Red
1975 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
There was some dark fruit here, with cedar and a bit of tree bark. The palate seemed a bit thin with the tannins still quite aggressive. Enjoyable wine, especially with food, but the other notes suggest that perhaps this is not a representative bottle... thus judgment deferred.

Flight 3 - DESSERT (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
1990 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
This was an interesting wine and a real treat. At first it seemed round, sweet and soft, but after swallowed the acids came in and really lifted the wine, framing the wild tropical fruit and honey flavors nicely. This really adheres to the palate and lingers nicely. With air, this continued to improve and became more precise... stellar wine with lots of upside.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1995 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Eiswein Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
96 points
Wow... it seems like we caught this wine at peak. Rich, yet chiseled notes of golden raisins, tropical fruits and peaches. The acids were perfectly integrated with the rich, ripe fruit flavors. Electric finish that refused to fade. So complex, balanced and pulsating with energy.
