Flight 1 (15 notes)

White
2007 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Floral, apple, lemon, spice and mandarin. Nicely balanced palate, there is poise and good acidity. Hasn't really taken on deep complexity yet but there is still the structure to keep ageing and hopefully take some more on.
White
2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Popcorn, graphite, lime and lemon. Sweet fruit on the palate but there is a cutting line of minerality that slices through. I like the style and verve of the fruit that gives the whole thing balance. Very good impression left by this wine.
White
2014 Idlewild Arneis Fox Hill Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
90 points
Pineapple, honey, apricot, floral notes, rhubarb and herbs. Palate has very good texture and while the fruit is fairly sweet, there is depth and interest. Great to try.
White
2011 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Smoke, mandarin, apple and pear. This is already drinking well, there is a lightness to the fruit that really flows well across its good length. Very good now and should be a good prospect for the short-medium term.
White
N.V. R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
87 points
Almond, violet, meat, honeycomb and chocolate. Oxidative palate, there is some decent acidity cutting through but it lacks a little bit of depth and interest otherwise.
Red
2014 Damien Bureau La Poivrotte France, Vin de France
75 points
Tomato, bubblegum, grass, passionfruit and stalks. The palate has the same oddball mix of flavours. Not at all for me thanks.
Red
2015 Passionvale Shiraz Sangiovese Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
89 points
Woody incense, pepper, cherry and a light stalky note. Good acid and grip on the palate, the fruit is lithe and it works within the style. Enjoyable and interesting.
Red
2001 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
89 points
Graphite, cherry, ash, blackcurrant and cranberry - quite perfumed nose. Good acidity and length, this is quite clean overall and while it is solid, it didn't feel like a classic Musar.
Red
2007 Chapoutier and Laughton Shiraz La Pleïade Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote
88 points
From magnum. Chocolate, earth, redcurrant and tar aromas. The fruit and the acid are both quite high on the palate, though I get a little bit of alcohol heat on the finish that detracts a little bit. Still enjoyable.
Red
1998 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
90 points
From magnum. Floral, cassis, earth and some slightly herbal notes. Well balanced, there is good depth and length. This is developing slowly in Magnum and I think will be even better with some more time.

2009 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Blood, iron, slate and stones with pencil shavings and floral aromas. Palate shows good balance and while the fruit is quite rich, the structure holds true. Has some lift and texture to it. Good showing for how youthful it is.

2006 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Tar, charcoal, cherry, rhubarb and tobacco. The palate is full and quite deep, with great purity of fruit and persistence. Despite its size it feels really well balanced and this should continue to impress with further age.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1993 Tokaj Hétszőlő Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
87 points
Honeysuckle, lime, mango yogurt and some smoke. The palate is dry, with the sweetness having receded with time. It feels like a little more sweetness would give it better balance but it was still nice to try.
White - Sparkling
2006 Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Apple, spice, orange and mineral. Good acidity with a nice pure palate profile. Good flow. Still youthful but just starting to show a little roundness.
White
N.V. Equipo Navazos La Bota de Vino Blanco 44 "Florpower" Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Caramel, almond, earth and oxidative notes. The palate is similar in profile with good acidity and minerality, with very good length. Just not quite as exciting or memorable as when I first tried this.
