Tasted September 10, 2016 by Mlermontov with 436 views

Introduction

Huge thanks to all involved - to Ivan and Ronnie for hosting and to all in attendance for company. Wines and food were excellent. Company was stellar.
The notes are brief - since we were having too much fun.
Overall takeaway - some wines punch waaaay above their weight. :) no names right?

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2010 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines France, Champagne
94 points
brioche, deeply aromatic with strawberry mousse, the mid is gorgeous - creamy light and deeply sexy. masculine profile on the back with a nice long finish. with time this really began to open up...but my glass was empty :( . give it time! easily one of the best champagnes i have had.
White
2012 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Spätlese trocken Germany, Pfalz
91 points
apple and peach. chalky and tons of mineral in the mid. bright. zesty grapefruit on the finish, with time - more peach. the mid is lacking compared to the amazing nose. i think it will need time and come into balance.

Flight 2 (7 notes)

Red
1995 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
leather, iron/meat, floral, the nose is the best part of this wine by far. the mid is lighter, black fruit dominated by a spike of acidity. good tart berry on the finish. lighter style wine showing age but still a lot to like here.

Red
2005 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
big bright cherry and blackberry. bold wine, with lots of power and structure. tar and earth in the mid. oak is there still - needs more time. smoky and peppery on the finish. very good indeed.
Red
2010 Georges Lelektsoglou / Compagnie de l'Hermitage Hermitage Cuvée des Moines France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
very young. maraschino cherry, liqueur. bright mid, great acidity. dusty tannic structure that opens up a bit with time. floral and developing over the evening. i would say this showed pretty backward. the red and blue fruit is there. the structure too. but not all together just yet.
Red
2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
94 points
WOW. black olive, meat, big beautiful fruit, black fruit, savory. pepper, herbs. complete package. still very young and will develop. tart delicious fruit on the finish. this is just excellent. WOTN for me.

too young. reduced nose on opening. after hour plus in the glass - started to show its stuff. honestly - leave this alone. there is so much beauty here - but it needs time to show itself. black fruit, sexy savory and spicy mid. great structure. delicious tart finish with earthy herbs. will be a star
Red
2014 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
IMO way way too young. and in this company - just outmatched. chocolate. raspberry yogurt. big chewy tannins. lots going on but tough to taste after the northern rhone debauch. needs a few years at the very least. mine will be untouched for 10 or so.

Red
2012 Paul Achs St. Laurent Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
served blind. funky. red fruit. nice cherry.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Fortified
N.V. Lopez Hermanos Málaga Don Juan Spain, Andalucía, Málaga
93 points
the last soldier. brought from Spain 10 years ago. This is a unicorn wine by now. Much lighter than the Jerez and Montilla PX, leaning toward the burnt orange and toffee, mid of coffee and orange marmalade. bright acidity keeping this sweety fresh. Perfect match with the chocolate mousse.
