Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2009 E. Guigal Ermitage Blanc Ex-Voto France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Drank after 1 hour of air in bottle.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, amber-gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of honey, hay, toast, nuts, hot stones minerality, and slight yellow florals. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol (13%) that feels a lot higher though, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honey, toast, caramel, nuts, hay/straw, ripe peach, apricots, yellow melon, rich waxy oil. Long finish.
Very good quality. Lovely intense nose and great rich depth of flavour on the palate. I like it now at this stage where there is just that touch of oxidative element that is not overwhelming yet.
90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne.

Very good quality. Probably as good as this is going to get. Drink up and enjoy.
There seems to be lots of bottle variation for this. Not a bottle I would dare to buy.

Tasted blind. Drank from bottle over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of licorice, toasty chocolaty oak, sweet spice, earth, black olives, red fruit hiding beneath. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red plums, concentrated red cherries, sweet spice, milk chocolate, licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. The fear on the nose was that there could be too much oak influence, but on the palate this reassures with its balance. Still young now, this will only improve with further ageing. Lots of upside potential.

On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), firm high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, wth flavours of sweet dark earth, black cherries, black plums, blackberries, licorice, smoke, sweet spices. Long finish.
Very good quality. A full throttle Syrah. Still young now, this feels like it needs another 7-8 years.
And again, there seems to be lots of varied reviews for the La Chapelle bottles before the new management in 2006.

Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of violets, stony minerality, smoked bacon meat, blackberries, black cherries, olives, savoury soil/earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), integrated fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of smokey meat, black cherries, blackberries, green olives, savoury earth. Very long finish.
Very good quality. Surprisingly strong showing in the blind tasting amongst other big boy Hermitage like Chapoutier's Ermite and Jaboulet's La Chapelle. Supposed to be a lighter style of Hermitage but I guess the exceptionally strong vintage gave this a good boost. Still feels like it could go another 4-5 years.

Outstanding quality (for me). This may feel a little unpolished, animalistic, and even almost a touch rustic, but this wine has so much character. Wow a really nice Hermitage. Impressed.
