Introduction

5 course menu paired with 5 wines from Egon Müller. A representative from the winery introduced all the wines and also brifely told the story behind the estate and the vineyard Scharzhofberger. The 2016 Estate was served as an aperitif.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2016 Egon Müller Riesling QbA Scharzhof Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
Screwcap. PnP. On the nose gooseberries, herbs, lime and white flowers. On the palate good minerality and striking acidity. A bit greenish and narrow for now, but with good potensial. The finish feels rather dry although there is residual sugar here at approx 27 gr/L.
White
2015 Egon Müller Riesling QbA Scharzhof Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Screwcap. PnP. Fairly intense nose of citrus, white flowers and allspice. Big concentration in the mouth, fruity attack and lingering acidity, really super QbA! Powerful, yet beautiful balanced. Clearly the best made Scharzhof ever.

White
2014 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
90 points
Screwcap. PnP. Served a bit too cold. Would have benefited from a double decant, seemed closed at the moment. Beneath you could sense some apricot and herbs. Difficult vintage and not sure which direction this is heading...
White - Off-dry
2016 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
Screwcap. PnP. Beautiful clean nose of pears, herbs and apples. On the palate a smooth flavour of tropical fruits, pears and spices. Lovely concentration and a pure backbone of acidity makes it very drinkable. Light auslese feel to it, pure and with no botrytis. A possible legend in the making!
White - Off-dry
2014 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Screwcap. PnP. Strong scent of citrus, pear, apples and mint. More complex and compact with still a fresh expression from apples and pears. Produced with some botrytis. Very good length and more open for business than the kabinett.
White - Off-dry
1997 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
Pale golden color. Opens with some botrytis, dried apricot and camphor. Intense, yet subtle. Huge concentration on the palate, but still light on its feet. Some honey and mature fruits. Long finish with some minerality that kicks in at the end. Interesting to see how this 97 has developed. The vintage was probably the first with such high ripeness and level of acidity, like we seen later in 2010 and 2015.

Closing

The wines probably would have benefited from a short double decant before serving as nearly all the wines came from bottles with screwcaps. The wines needed time and temperature in the glass to show better off.
