Introduction

I met up again with the lovely Paul and mayhem ensued as I got thoroughly excited about the choice, quality and price of wines in London wine bars…

Flight 1 - Noble Rot (7 notes)

Paul arrived late so I 'punished' him by lining up three whites to blind taste. We then tried a couple more wines then had a rather splendid lunch of mackerel followed by exceedingly rare beef.

White
2016 Adega de Monção Vinho Verde Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
slight honey, peach, herbaceous notes and wet stone on the nose. It's a bit cold and, with the application of warm hands, it gets some citrus notes as well. On the palate it's quite juicy; the citrus more prevalent with what tastes like a touch of almost of residual sugar. Medium plus length. Clean.
White
2016 Domaine Luneau-Papin Folle Blanche France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Gros-Plant du Pays Nantais
Low intensity aromas of lanolin, lemon and neutral floor wax. In the mouth it's juicy, waxy and surprisingly honeyed. Very slight silky burr on the front of the palate. Nice.
White
2016 Champalou Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Apple over lemon, slightly spiced and mineral elements. Almost butter and honey - nose playing tricks I suspect. Juicy with a citric tang backed by ripe green apple. Dry but fresh and juicy. A little alcohol warmth that is not intrusive; other than that it's lovely.
White
2016 Murgo Etna Bianco Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
muted, wet stone, lanolin. Muted fruit, tangy, citrus, a bit warm and flavourless on the palate.

White
2015 Domaine Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Blanc Les Femelottes France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Butter, lemon, peaches, slight toast, slight bitterness but much of a muchness to the nose.
White
2016 Eva Fricke Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling Trocken Germany, Rheingau
passion fruit and pear. Pretty. Bone dry, tangy, nice with pickled mackerel. More nashi pear on the palate with time.
Red
2014 Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Berry, spiced, juicy, cherry fruit, friendly and fresh. Rather nice with the rare beef.

Flight 2 - Blandford Comptoir (2 notes)

After a lovely stroll we ended up at Blandford Comptoir where the wine list was classed as 'dangerous'. Managed to control ourselves with a single bottle of Gevrey but then succumbed to a Coravin pour of the Cos…

Red
2010 Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Cherry, berry, quite a fair lick of new oak lends a slightly chocolate note. On the palate it has sufficient acidity to make it juicy and fleshy with a little bitterness married to the soft cherry fruit and a touch of chocolate and coffee…kind of yum.
Red
1990 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
horse shit, wet hay, meat over sous bois, mushrooms, brambles. In the mouth it's leathery, still some silky, but drying, tannins over savoury, meaty brambly fruit. Proper aged Bordeaux. Nice

Flight 3 - Comptoir Mayfair (2 notes)

The girl at Blandford Comptoir recommended their newly opened sister wine bar/restaurant. We duly sauntered the (fortunately for us) 7 minute straight line walk to discover, joy of joys, a cellar full of exceedingly dangerous wine…fortunately Paul offered a steady hand which stopped it getting completely out of control...We did have some rather splendid goose terrine & a small selection of cheeses

Red
2007 Pascal Lachaux Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Cranberry, slightly ashy, still quite primary and tight. Tight tannins. Still a puppy. With time it opens and blossoms to reveal cherry, biscuit and toast but it's all still very primary.
Red
1986 Château Montus Madiran France, Southwest France, Madiran
Leather, old blackcurrant over plums, earth and sweet spice, slight vegetal elements. Juicy, muted fruit…more about the tertiary earth and leather now but still has tannic grip…woof.

Flight 4 - The winemakers club (3 notes)

Our final destination. A wine bar in Deptford - so on the way 'home' for both of us. Paul hadn't tried it before so we gave it a go. We waded through a couple more bottles of red with a charcuterie plate before they very kindly gave us the last half of a bottle of Champagne.

Red
2013 Setriolo Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Ripe cherry and tobacco. Smells dense and thick and spicy. Juicy, slightly sour cherry, thick as with bold tannins, a little earthy. Hmm. Time.
Red
2013 Giacomo Brezza e Figli Barbera d'Alba Superiore Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore
toilet water and cherry, rich, earth and spice. Quite big and bold.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Olivier Horiot Champagne 5 Sens France, Champagne
aggressive mousse, apples, bread. Juicy, apples and lemons, slightly gritty tannins - or, at least, the mousse creates that illusion. It's a bit coarse for me.

Closing

And after that sterling effort I was dropped near the airbnb that I was staying at…fortunately near a fish and chip shop…Another wonderful evening with Paul.
