Coche and Rousseau Dinner

RPM Steak - Chicago, IL

Tasted April 13, 2018 by Nanda with 274 views

Introduction

With some out of town Burgundy collectors in town for the HDH auction, we gathered for a dinner to drink some Coche-Dury and Rousseau. The generosity and spirt of sharing among Burg lovers has no bounds. If it's possible the wines over-delivered on my high expectations. Kudos to RPM Steak for a quality meal and attentive service.

Flight 1 - Bubbles (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
95 points
Consistent with my prior notes. I love the youthful power and richness in this Krug. With excellent balancing acidity and oak influence.

Flight 2 - Coche Village Meursault (2 notes)

White
2005 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
Tasted in an 05/07 pair. Rich matchstick and orchard fruit nose. Gets more interesting and layered with time to reveal layers of sweet orchard fruit and mineral. More linear and crisp, than the fat and lush 07.
White
2007 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tasted in an 05/07 pair. Full nose of matchstick and high toned orchard fruit. The palate is so rich and expansive. Quite literally a big wall of of dense, pure and rich orchard fruit. Firing on all cylinders and totally delicious.

Flight 3 - Coche 1er Cru Meursault (2 notes)

White
2011 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
96 points
Tasted with 06 Perrieres. A soaring nose so much chalk and mineral. Stuffed with unending richness and raciness working together at once. Sweet orchard fruit, chalk and mineral all interwoven throughout. Long and powerful finish.
White
2006 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Tasted with 11 Caillerets. As overt and flashy a nose as I've smelled with vast depth and intensity. Densely packed palate with rich, concentrated sweet white fruit that is balanced with harmonious taut acidity. Citrus, mineral and roasted nuts add complexity. This is stuffed and all elements are working in harmony.

Flight 4 - Chambertin (3 notes)

Red
1989 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
98 points
Tasted in a 89/93/01 flight. This is aromatically perfect with layer after layer of intense yet well-composed aromas -- aged black cherry, plum, smoked meat, leather and spice. Meaty aged fruit on the palate that is complex, weightless and long. I preferred the palate of the 93 as it had a bit more concentration and energy - but that's nitpicking. This is an epic wine.

Tasted in a 89/93/01 flight. Aromatically this is generous, if a bit less refined than the spellbinding '89 nose. Aromas of big rich meaty black cherry with some toast influence. On the palate this has great richness and power with crazy amounts of intense meaty spice. The fruit is at once sweet and ripe, and savory and earthy. Elegant, precise finish.

Tasted in a 89/93/01 flight. A bit grumpy and closed in relative to the signing '89 and '93 tasted in the same flight. Firm and tight with wound up rich, concentrated and primary. Not yet showing its stuff. Upside from here in 5-10 years.

Flight 5 - Clos de Beze (3 notes)

Red
1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
93 points
Tasted in a 88/96/99 flight. Terrific lifted nose has savory, sweaty and meaty fruit with plenty of spice. Lighter fruit concentration but lots of energy and spice accents on the mid-palate. A bit short on the end.

1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Tasted in a 88/96/99 flight. A ridiculously lifted, ethereal and intense set of aromatics that are mesmerizing -- ripe black cherry, savory notes, with meat and spice. Generous, concentrated black fruit that is laced with intense spice throughout. Concentrated yet ethereal. Dazzlingly impressive.

Tasted in a 88/96/99 flight. A bigger, richer and less refined version of the '96 tasted side by side. This has more density but not the nuance and brightness of the impressive '96. Delicious, but there is more to come with 5+ years of cellar time.

Flight 6 - CSJ (1 note)

Red
1983 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
98 points
Impressively youthful. If served blind, you could never have guessed 35 years old. The nose has insane depth with gorgeous mature, but still sweet fruit, along with earth, smoked meat and spice. The fruit on the palate is succulent and sweet, belying it's age. Delicious, long, savory finish.

Flight 7 - Bonus DRC (1 note)

Red
1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
97 points
A generous end of dinner pop n' pour that we enjoyed over an hour or so. A spectacular kaleidoscopic nose of black cherry, clay, and Vosne spice. The fruit is young, rich, ripe and dense, with so much intense Vosne spice. Well-structured and fresh, despite the fruit concentration. Long finish.
