Introduction

Presented by Malcolm Franks.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2000 L'Esprit de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
87 points
Dense core, but surprisingly some brown at the rim coming out. The fruit is very brambly on the nose with some tobacco, coffee and dampness. Perhaps a little burn too. The fruit is fairly smooth on the palate and is much more prominent. Some tobacco and coffee on the chewy, tannic and rather bitter mid palate. An oaky, short finish. The nose promises more than is delivered.
Red
1997 Clos du Marquis France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Deep ruby with a little fading. The nose shows bright black, curranty fruit. There's some dampness and gameyness too. Blackcurrant and plum attack on the palate with some oak and coffee tastes. Smooth, robust, perhaps a little lean. Tannin is resolved. Medium, plummy finish. A bold wine which just feels a little lop-sided.
Red
1996 Les Fiefs de Lagrange France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
88 points
Deep red, inky and slight purpling. Wood, beany and green vegetable notes on the nose. Some blackcurrant and spice too. The palate similarly shows dark brambly fruit although it is a little stalky and the vegetal tastes overwhelm a little. Plenty of acidity.
Red
1996 La Dame de Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
88 points
Deep ruby. Gamey blackcurrant notes. A little burn. Spice and pepper. The palate shows peppery fruit and some rather jagged tannin. Probably in need of a few more years. This wine shows promise and that lovely herby, spicy complexity.
Red
1996 Les Pagodes de Cos France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
89 points
Red, still youthful appearance. On the nose, plum, vegetal notes and bell pepper. The fruit on the palate was blackberries. Very fresh, yet also still quite tannic and a little chewy. There's some time ahead of this one yet. A lovely, medium bodied wine with a real kick.
Red
1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Croix de Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Youthful, ruby and a little fading. Meaty notes on the nose and a little sweetness due to the ripe blackcurrant fruit. On the palate the fruit is smooth but also a little jammy, I guess more of a new world style Bordeaux. This tastes fully mature. Tobacco on the medium finish.
Red
1996 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Ruby and beginning to fade, a lovely consistency. The fruit on the nose is bright with some cedarwood. Chocolate, spicy christmas cake and raisin character follow. On the palate the fruit is black, the spices are there and some coffee too. Very full, long warming coffee finish. Lots of everything, a lovely voluptuous wine. Still tannic, come back in another couple of years or so.
Red
1995 Le Carillon de l'Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion
91 points
Ruby, fading, nice and clear. Plummy, floral and gamey notes on the nose. On the palate more flowers and ripe red fruit with some more meaty notes. An elegant wine which is lovely drinking right now and not bad value at all.
