Delas Hermitage Masterclass with Steven Spurrier

Handford Wines, London

Tasted June 11, 2018 by Papies with 264 views

Introduction

Steven Spurrier presented a fine set of Delas Hermitage in the intimate setting that is Handford wines tastings. He walked as through the wine making and history of the domain as well as touched a bit on his one memoirs given the imminent launch of his book.

For us Delas key take aways are of a classic and elegant wine, devout of heavy oak big but not chunky syrah and with no heavy spices.

Flight 1 - The Welcome (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2014 Bride Valley Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs United Kingdom, England, South West, Dorset
88 points
Definitely an improvement over the 2013 ( Papies 85) which was a bit on the confectionery side.
This was a lot better, more pure, better balanced and with a mineral side. Apple touches, soft ripe feel. Good energy too. Very happy to see the improvement here, 87-88

Flight 2 - The Whites (2 notes)

White
2016 Delas Frères Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Les Launes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
87 points
Floral with exotic touches, white flowers, peach. Light on the palate, on the simple side, very little oak if any. Decent acidity, young and fresh and better sooner than later. Had a bit too pronounced Rhone white bitterness on the finish. A bit lighter than we would have expected. 87
White
2016 Delas Frères Hermitage Blanc Domaine des Tourettes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Interesting to try this vs the 2016 Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Les Launes ( Papies 87) as it shows so much more of everything and frames how good the wine is. Darker in color, richer color we might say. Buttery feel, a lot more oak here, honey touches, nutty, good ripeness and acidity . Touch exotic on the palate too, rich but in balance and harmony, Very solid 91 easily can age more but we are not believers in over-aged Rhone whites.

Flight 3 - The Crozes (1 note)

Red
2015 Delas Frères Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
88 points
Dark color, dark red with a purple rim. Fresh and vibrant dark fruits on the nose, blackcurrants. Quite tannic on the palate and definitely could use some further ageing, has a nice purity and elegance still and just points to a much better future. Very young now. 88 for now but definitely will improve.

Flight 4 - The Main Event (8 notes)

Red
2014 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Good dark, bright colour with purple rim that screams too young , and indeed it is. A mistake to open this prior to 10yrs in bottle.
Good nose though, light smoky, some oaky feel, smoky touches, elegant nose , light spice but quite restrained don the fruit. 2014 was a light vintage but this wine does raise one's hopes for the future and we wonder if this would be another 1994 ( We love Chave's 1994) as this will never be a big wine but will definitely have charm. A very solid 91 even at this young age but really this need patience.

2013 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
From a small yield vintage that 2013 was. Young, dark color with purple touches on the rim. Firm wine and lacks richness of fruit. Blackcurrant son the nose, light spice ( very much a Delas characteristic how light the spice is) , blueberries, a bitof oak there too. Elegant and fresh, a bit on the green side, We dint find this as robust as we though it would be and thus we would question how long this can age albeit for sure young now. A bit thin too especially on the mid palate. give this 5 yrs. 90-91

Dark red in color still. Very nice nose, what we would call classic hermitage in a way (albeit less smoky here as Delas uses less oak) , very welcoming nose, dark fruit, elegant touch of spice, succulent and mouthwatering wine. Very nice balance, still on the young but inside its drinking window albeit we would still wait a few more years to harness the full potential of this wine. Polished and elegant wine.92 and with potential for more

flawed
Color showed age and we approached this testign vintage with caution but in general the wine felt wrong and off. We believe this was a bad bottle.

This wine has definitely improved a lot with age and is now showing superb ( Papies 89 in 2013). The color shows its age, very pretty wine, good ripe fruit but soft, elegant , harmonious and with silky-ish tannin. Very good use of oak here. The nose is the peak of of this wine at this stage, Burgundian in a way, pure expression of fruit. This is now marching well into the greatness zone and definitely has a lot of life ahead of it.

Nose was off and this was on the maderised path. Gone.

Low yields here from this good yet forgotten vintage according to Steven Spurrier.
Dark red in color, youthful and definitely feels younger than the softer 2007 ( Papies 93). Structured and firm wine, rich and full, black fruits and full of energy. Very solid wine and very harmonious. This has a lot way to go and will only get better . Lots of life here. 92-94 for now.

WOTN by miles. 8 year since we tried this last ( Papies 89) and Lord this has blossomed into something superb!
Good color still. Nose is that love affair of Hermitage, roast meat, smoky touches, tertiary evolved dark fruits, leather. The wine is full of energy and vigor, lovely presence on the mid palate, harmonious and still with richness of fruit. Big but elegant and super long. 95

Comment of the Evening from Steven Spurrier : " The wine has shed its tannin but lost none of its structure"

Flight 5 - The Mystery Vintage (1 note)

Red
2011 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Served Vintage blind.
The wine has an intense red fruit feel, younger fresh red fruits that in a way was a typical to the rest. We guessed on the nose 2003 but the palate was soft and not 2003 ripe so we went for a ripe vintage and guessed 2009.
Not our favorite as that intense red fruit was a bit too much, at this stage at least. Young for sure and will need time. 90-91 for now.

Flight 6 - Follow up dinner at Wright Brothers , South Ken (3 notes)

White
2015 Domaine Guillemot-Michel Viré-Clessé Quintaine France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Viré-Clessé
87 points
On the young side but felt very pretty and definitely punches way above its fighting range. Especially compared with the 2014 ( Papies 89 albeit from magnum) this definitely felt like it has the legs to improve further. Bright, energetic, very pure wine, good acidity. Very happy wine , unpretentious and with character. 87 but very good 87.

From magnum a a step better than the 2015 ( Papies 87) and really pretty now. Yellow fruits, mineral and purity here galore. Nice energy but also soft and with good presence on the palate. Much like the 2015 a very happy wine , unpretentious and with character. Good 89
White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Le Haut-Lieu France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
96 points
Magnificent wine and albeit at a very good time in its life this will last for many years more.
Bright and energetic still, apple feel, less of that rich caramel and more bright honey , balanced, lovely acidity and effortlessly pretty and in a way light on it feet. This is a superb sweet wine and a solid 96+. Must buy more

( with hindsight and amending this TN post the passing of Steven Spurrier we could not have chosen a better wine to take and share with him and a few others in what would be last time we would see him. He named Huet as one of his 10 best wine experiences in his book and taking this was a tribute we now feel)
