A Napa Trio of Cabs

at Home

Tasted June 16, 2018 by cab blends with 154 views

Introduction

This was an unplanned trio of Napa Cabs and a nice comparison after the fact. All three held up one against another and while the Rivers Marie with food was superior to the two Caymus' by themselves with cheese and crackers, they all held up well together.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2015 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
92 points
Tasted on day 2 and this has developed nicely and mellowed on the palate.
The acidity integrated into the body far better than day 1

Moved the score 1 point.

The classic fruit bomb Napa floor cab for me (or at least it fancier brother Special Selection is). For me this was the first standard Caymus that emulated the Special Selection although with a little less body and intensity. I am sure I will read the winemakers story one day.

Cinnamon on the nose and lovely late tannins on the palate with darker red fruits. Decadent over extraction with vanilla tones. The finish is slightly shorter than expected and moves it to 94-. Maybe the age is beginning to show? That might be a concern and given I have another case to go I should watch carefully.

I love this as a before meal with cheese and then again after dinner (it is a little too fruity to go with steak for me). For those who don't like fruity stay away.

Very similar to the 40th anniversary with more tannins and a longer finish.

Some tobacco leather on the nose as well. This was a pnp at the end of the evening and especially to compare against the 40th anniversary.
