Montreal Monster Wine Tasting @ Chez Christophe

Tasted October 26, 2007 - October 27, 2007 by mimik with 1,826 views

Introduction

The usual Montreal posse was present(Steve8, Vinaigre, KSC02, Dr. C, and Mimik) for a teeth-staining experience. Wines were NOT served blind. The WOTN of the night was the Janasse, followed by the Pio Cesare Barolo and the Achaval-Ferrer Quimera as the 3rd WOTN. A great tasting(and drabfest).

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2001 Fattoria Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

A nose of coffee, earth and some red plums. The palate was different than the nose with a more acidic and tannic bite that disguised a lot of the fruit. I believe this needs time and as Steve8 mentioned, it gained complexity and weight since he had this bottle last.
Red
1997 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

My 2nd runner up WOTN, this had a beautiful flowery nose of morello cherries, strawberries, dark chocolate and leather with a more strawberry driven palate, ripe with very pronouced acidity. Long strawberry finish. Needs food.
Red
2004 Umberto Cesari Liano Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Rubicone

Very enjoyable but a rather straightforward wine. A deep nose of candied cassis and blackberry jam. Smoth and lush and slightly closed. Give it a couple more years.
Red
2002 Torbreck Shiraz The Struie Australia, South Australia, Barossa
91 points
Dark brooding nose of cassis which follows on the palate with licorice and dark cherries(overripe) on the dense teeth staining palate. Needs some time to smoothen itself out but very decandently pleasurable now. Would have scored higher if not for a short-mid long finish.
Red
2004 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
91 points
Strong nose of eucalyptus, camphor and mint with a definite blackberry jam component. More blackberry oozing on the well structured palate but hits you with a wall of tannins on the finish. Improved over the night but obviously way too closed now. Decanted 1 hour, needed more like 5 hours.
Red
2004 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
92 points
Tied for 2nd, this very minty nosed wine was very pleasantly smooth with cherries and cassis on the palate. Long finish with sweet plums. I think it was beginning to close down but still drinkable.
Red
2004 Achával-Ferrer Quimera Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
I found this wine very muted. Did not get much out of the wine due to its closed stage so it was not rated.

This was my 2nd WOTN. There was something really unique about this wine but I could not put my finger on it. An intriguing nose of freshly cut figs and blackcherries with more of the same on the palate framed by smokey oak notes. Lovely finish and texture in the mouth. The wine with the most character of the night, IMO. Again, young but approachable now.
Red
2000 Clos du Marquis France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Nose of freshly brewed coffee and oak. Palate is surprisingly approachable for a 2000 bdx with more coffee, pencil shavings, plumand cedar nose hiding the fruit. Long, tangy finish. Well balanced wine and quite enjoyable.
Red
2005 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Classic raspberry, garrigue cherry nose with some vanilla and strawberry notes. The palate is very dense with tangy acidity and a clean fruit driven palate and finish changing in the glass between strawberries and raspberries. Yum. 94+ for now. Revisit in 6+ years.
Red
2003 Kilikanoon Shiraz Covenant Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
92 points
Dark colour(ink black) with licorice and oaky notes hiding most of the fruit. The palate was sweet, low acidity wwith more oak and cherries and dark plum. Nice finish, long and somewhat tannic. Needs time.
White - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. KEO St. John Commandaria Cyprus, Commandaria
90 points
Really enjoyable and a scream ing deal for the price. Nutty, raisiny, nose with dates and Sunmaid raisins and coffee that continued into a slightly alcoholic palate that is cloying but not unpleasantly so. Reminds me of the Yalumba Muscat Museum Reserve but with more body to it. Long sweet raisiny finish.
