An decent showing, but missing that next-level oomph. Refreshing and crisp, but a bit singular in its delivery of would-be complex flavors. Paired well with the seafood dishes. As a stand-alone, it displayed a bit simple. Good, fun, and all that jazz... but it appears more time in bottle is needed. Hold another year or two.

Red
2012 Dana Estates Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

My first experience with this wine. It unfolded really nicely throughout the evening. A ton of verve here, with a tension that provides a hyper-focused delivery of flavors. As others have noted, it certainly wore its youth on its sleeve. That being said, I thought the purity of fruit was utterly fantastic (which is really where this wine gains all of its points). A little more red-fruit driven, with black cherry, black and red raspberry, crunchy cranberry, barely-ripe purple plum, river rock, and some soft cedar flavors.

Hold firm on this budding flower for another 3-5 years. I think this will be exceptionally stunning with time in-bottle to eventually drop into a deeper groove. Phenomenal potential here. 95-96++ points. Hold until after 2022+.

Red
2015 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Coiled-up red currant, red cherry liqueur, black cherry, spice, and peppercorn. Bound up pretty tight, with a spicy/peppery element to compliment the red (and black-ish) core fruit. The purity of fruit was very nice, though a Dana Hershey served beside it was more elevated by comparison. Nevertheless, this was a very nice wine, hindered only by youthful tension and grip that clamped down on the core fruit. Great acidity and structure here.

Give this another 4-5 years to fully come together. 94++ points after a few years to unwind a bit.
