Introduction

We were invited to spend an evening of good cuisine, wine, and company chez Micki and Stef. The kids ran around until the point of exhaustion while we took turns prepping, cooking, cleaning while enjoying engaging conversation and wine. We put the kids to bed before the main course and--MAGIC--they all stayed asleep. The only sour moment occurred when I received the hairy eyeball from my wife when she noticed I had no trimmed fat from the steak left on my plate. I swear I did not notice any big fatty pieces. The reds were double decanted (croix for 4 hrs, las cases 1.5hrs).

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
2006 Château Graville-Lacoste Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves
89 points
Pale yellow color. Nose of white fruits. Palate of ripe apple, pear with nice dense mouthfeel and good acidity. Nice as an aperitif and with a creamy cheese.
Red
2001 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Croix de Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Ruby color. Nose of dark fruits, cedar. Palate of blackberry, some cassis, tobacco, some wet stone. Decent tannins. Well structured, lighter style Bordeaux. Paired well with seared, rubbed tuna with a wasabi aoli and cucumbers.
Red
1994 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Deep ruby color. Expressive nose of briary fruits and cassis, mild cedar and a floral undercurrent. Palate of deep fruits, a hint of cedar and minerality. Velvety, mouth coating tannins slowly build giving this a nice density and a long finish. Very youthful. Overall a dense, well-structured, lovely wine. I think I'll wait another 4-6 yrs to drink the others. Paired with rubbed, grilled rib eye and broiled, parmasean asperagus.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Haut-Bergeron Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Previous note applies. Light yellow. Nose of honey, apricots. Similar palate with slight orange rind and a nice racy acidity which balanced the sweetness. Paired with pate and a selection of cheeses. Delicious.

Closing

The next morning--7am bonus--no headache, probably because Micki had a pot of strong coffee and the leftover cheeses already at room temperature. They were great on bagels. All had so much fun, we decided we were going to do this quarterly. Stay tuned for future events!

Thanks again to Micki and Stef for hosting such a great evening.
