93 points
White
1972 Remoissenet Père et Fils Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Beautiful mature Burg. Nose of cardamom. Finish not as long as the 70 Remoissenet Montrachet
White
1973 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Classic mature Burgundy. Clearly a step above the Remoissenet. Beautiful orange notes. So well balanced.
White
1966 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
99 points
A real revelation! Very spicy nose. Gorgeous acidity and freshness. No oxidation at all compared to the Burgundies.

White
1976 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Réserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
97 points
Awesome complexity. Smokey notes. This has some of the same tell-tale animalistic notes as the Rayas reds. Really stunning.

Flight 3 (5 notes)

Red - Fortified
1814 Mandive Vigo Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
98 points
Awesome nose. Incredible complexity of madeirized flavors and licorice. Unctuous texture. This goes on and on. Impossible to put down.
Red
1896 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
90 points
Smokey tangy barbecue flavors. Fully evolved. No body left but still some nice acidity.
Red
1893 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
86 points
Acidity front and center. Still some dry tannins left. Color still remarkably dark and saturated. Stripped of most of its fruit. Interesting but not much more.
Red
1880 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
96 points
Probably the most controversial wine of the evening. This initially had a very medicinal nose which then turned into an overwhelming floral bouquet of violets (we dubbed the wine "ultra violet"). Some found it too much and off-putting but it was truly unique and fascinating
Red
1900 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
99 points
The most classical of this flight of 19th century classics. Fantastic textbook tertiary Bordeaux flavors. Medium finish. Smoke and dark fruit. Elegance married with latent power. Gorgeous!

Flight 4 (6 notes)

Red
1935 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Nose fully mature. A bit oxidized. Great intensity.
Red
1947 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
100 points
WOTN for me (among a stunning once-in-a-lifetime line-up). I could not get enough of the aromas and could have sniffed this all night long. Unbelievably bright. Orange peel mixed with smoke. So complex, so beautiful. It doesn't get any better than this

Red
1948 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
95 points
Somewhat evolved on the nose. Very strong black tea aromas. Very smokey and velvety.
Red
1961 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru
98 points
Stunning nose. The flavor complexity is awe-inspiring. Lots of brooding earthy and mushroom notes. Goes on and on open the finish. Pure royalty
Red
1964 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
Others liked this much better than I did. The wine had noticeably less body compared to the others in the red Burg flight. Flavors were very subtle.
Red
1971 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
94 points
Much more evolved than the '47. Some madeirized notes. Beautiful complexity and length

Flight 5 (7 notes)

Red
1955 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
86 points
Disappointing. Thin and flat. No match for the other great '55 Bordeaux in the flight
Red
1955 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
97 points
LMHB is always one of my perennial favorites and it again shone brightly tonight. Textbook LMHB smokiness, beautiful acidity and freshness. Impossible to put down.
Red
1955 Château Trotanoy France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Awesome earthy and animal/barnyard notes. Great acidity and freshness left. Really enjoyable.
Red
1955 Château Latour à Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Very fresh, bright fruit and acidity. Finish not as long
Red
1955 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
97 points
Gorgeous saturated fruit. Very smokey. Pure velvet. This is 100% elegance.
Red
1955 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Elegance in a bottle. Not heavy at all, very light on its feet. Dark fruit with lots of complexity. A little short on the finish.
Red
1955 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Blind bottle. Fresh acidity. Light and elegant.

Flight 6 (6 notes)

Red
1950 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie Grande Cuvée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
92 points
Awesome nose. A bit thinner than some of the other Phones in the line-up. Still very much alive, though
Red
1959 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
97 points
An awesome nose. Saturated fruit, velvet body. Still unbelievably young. Complex nose of strawberries.
Red
1929 Cave du Val-Clos Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Chatel du Roy" France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Still amazingly alive. More delicate flavor profile but a lot of body left
Red
1979 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
96 points
Clearly younger han the others. Big and bold with lots of complexity. Flavors go on and on. Delicious!

Red
1970 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
flawed
Amazingly, this was the only bottle tonight that was clearly flawed
Red
1974 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Leaning more towards Grenache and strawberry flavors. Elegant and refined. No sense of overt maturity, very classic.

Flight 7 (4 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1780 S.A. Málaga Larios Málaga Spain, Andalucía, Málaga
98 points
Awesome! Incredibly syrupy but not heavy at all. A panoply of complex flavors. Endless finish. So good!
Red - Fortified
1886 Ferreira Porto Garrafeira Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
A bit of alcohol burn. Very viscous. Deep caramelized flavors
White - Sweet/Dessert
1934 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
99 points
Wow! What nuanced flavors of orange peel. Never ending finish. So much complexity
White - Sweet/Dessert
1936 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
96 points
Beautiful and elegant. Not as big as the Yquem. Perfectly balanced. So delicious.
