Vinology, Houston, Tx

Tasted October 2, 2018 by Heynetty with 116 views

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2015 Ceritas Chardonnay Trout Gulch USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Tasted Blind

A: medium lemon with golden highlights
N: Peach (tart), leon, grapefruit, SALTED LEMON, white flowers, wet stone. Medium nose. youthful
P: Dry, high acid, medium (-) alcohol (12.5%), medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish
C: Very good quality wine. Can drink now but has potential for aging

GUESSES:
Got wet stone quickly and so thought Old world. The alcohol didn't feel high and the body was not too noticeable and so i thought this was from a cool to moderate climate. Guesses either albarino or chardonnay. Final guess was Albarino. That salt indicated coastal.

MISTAKES:
the wet stone wasn't dominant and so the New World option should have been left on the table. I got some bitterness which drove me to Albarino but it was just the tannin from a barrel that i detected. The salt was there owing to the location of Santa Cruz Mountains (its a coastal mountain range)

White
2016 Hubert Brochard Sancerre Tradition France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Tasted Blind

A: Pale lemon
N: Pronounced Intensity
Jolly rancher lime, gooseberry, grass, green apple, wet stone. Youthful
P: Dry, high acid, medium alcohol (13%), medium body, pronounced intensity, medium (+) finish
C: Drink now. Very good quality wine.

GUESSES:
Very wet stoney and so old world. The green gooseberry aromas made this sauvignon blanc. I thought the fruit was pretty ripe and intense. I went for 2015 as it was a ripe year...i think.

MISTAKES:
It was 2016.
White
2016 Goldbelly Viognier USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Tasted Blind

A: Pale lemon
N: Orange blossoms, orange pith, apricots, peach, chamomile, wax, butter
P: Some phenolic bitterness. Dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) alcohol (14%), full body, medium (+) intensity and finish
C: Very good quality wine. drink now.

GUESSES:
the stone fruit and bitterness said albarino to me. No wet stone and so New World. Highish alcohol and heavy tearing put me in warm to hot climate.

MISTAKES:
Viognier gives phenolic bitterness and lots of stone fruit and so it should have been on my short list. Acid was much higher than i thought it should be for Vognier but if its acidified then that would account for it.

NOT A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF NW VIOGNIER

2012 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Crianza Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Tasted Blind

A: Pale Ruby (garnet highlights)
N: Tart cherry, raspberry, cranberry, earth, baking spice, black tea, tobacco, leather. Developing
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, medium tannin, medium (+ alcohol (13.5%) , medium (+) body, pronounced intensity and medium (+) finish
C: Drink now. Very good quality.

GUESSES:
Old world owing to the earth. Moderate climate given the acid and alcohol , lots of oak notes of leather and tobacco with tannin mainly oak derived (on front third of tongue). This lead me to tempranillo early on. Final guess. Rioja. 2013

MISTAKES:
IT was older than i thought but still fresh. Good showing.

2013 Aster Ribera del Duero Crianza Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Tasted Blind

A: Deep Ruby
N: Cherry, fig, cranberry, baking spice, tobacco, leather. Medium intensity, Developing
N: Dry, high acid, tannins verging on high, full body, medium intensity and medium finish
C: Good quality wine. Balance and complexity. Wish the intensity was higher.

GUESSES:
hallmarks of tempranillo were cherry, fig, leather and tobacco. However the tannin and acid and body were surprising. I would have moved onto another grape looking at the structure but Ribero del Duero is at altitude and so the grapes are smaller with thicker skins. You get more color and tannins, high acid as its cool up there and so guessed what it was.

2014 Couly-Dutheil Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Tasted Blind

A: Deep ruby with purple highlights. Stained tears.
N: Dusty violets, lavender, licorice, cherry, green stems or green bell pepper, cherry, light pepper, earth. Developing. Medium (+) int.
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, tannin, body, intensity, alcohol (13.5%) and finish.
C: Clearly balanced in terms of structure and aroma. Very good quality wine but not complex. Can drink now but has potential for aging.

GUESSES:
STUMPED HERE. I think i thought it might be a Beaujolais Cru owing to that green herbal steaminess and the purple but was unhappy with the guess.

MISTAKES:
That herbal stemmy aroma was green bell pepper again and so i missed that it was a Bordeaux grape. Had i gotten some graphite and red bell pepper, i would have known this was Cab Franc.

MUST TASTE CAB FRANC AND BEAUJOLAIS CRUS SIDE BY SIDE
