Alpha Estate & Friends Dinner

Murano, London

Tasted November 3, 2018 by Papies with 148 views

Introduction

Our friends from Alpha Estate were once again in London for the Decanter event. We could not but organise a wine dinner worthy of the occasion.
The good people from Murano, London allowed us to overstep their hospitality on the corkage front and we shall be forever grateful.

Flight 1 - A trio of 2000s with the starters (3 notes)

Be it the best vitello tonato or burrata with lovely citrus or for the cheeky ones a tortellini dish

White
2000 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
95 points
Much like all old whites we should have decanted it. A mistake as the wine tood its time to develop. 2 years since we tried it last ( Papies 93) and our fourth bottle in as many years ( 93-94 score range).
A super solid wine, solid acidity, polished though, light honey touches, citrus and at times even an exotic side. Elegant, soft but with lots of depth and lots of life ahead. solid 94-95 and a wine that must be tried. Gladly we have a few more bottles!

2000 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
We are not sure if this was a proper bottle. Not oxidised or corked or any noticeable fault , barring a touch of bret on the nose, but did not behave as we expected it too. Granted a few years since we tried this last ( Papies 93) but expected so much more. This was dry and short and not up to standard so we will refrain from rating. We do have a magnum hiding somewhere hopefully that would be more up to standard :)

2000 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
95 points
Decanted and enjoyed over a good hour. What a wine! For lovers of classic US Cab or for people like us who love that Bordeaux style but with the extra dollop of ripeness that the new world offers this is it.
The nose is very much cab sauv, less herby cab sauv and more spice edge with a touch of a smoky side too. DArk fruited, lots of presence on the palate, well assimilated oak and very harmonious. Very much alive and still on the primary side if nothing else. Solid 95 and drinks very well now. Lots of life ahead here.

Flight 2 - Mr Gaja takes centre (1 note)

Pheasant agnioloti or Gnudi with butter and sage

Red
2004 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Decanted and served. Solid is the word that came to mind when we tried this.
Proper structure, well ripened but not overdone in any way and is as if Gaja in recent years has toed tone this side of their wine making. Good dark cherry, light tar, solid structure here with big but soft on the edges tannin. Just about starting to dance now but very much delicious 93-94 from us

Flight 3 - The Main Event (2 notes)

Pork like no other..

Red
2008 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
93 points
Decanted and served blind. Very interesting to see the reaction here. Granted not a wine we drink a lot or a style we look forward to on a given day but definitely put a smile on our face. We prefer this lighter valpolicellas (of course from the masters like Quintarelli & Dal Forno) to their much bigger amarones..
Violets on the nose, dark fruits, no apparent feel of oak. Lots of palate presence, depth and well manged richness counterbalanced by solid acidity. Round on the edges and drinks very solidly now. 93-94 and superb value.

2010 Sine Qua Non Syrah Five Shooter USA, California, Central Coast

3 years since we tried this ( Papies 95) and continues to develop and deliver.
The nose points straight to the style of wine big california syrah, Alban, SQN, Saxum. But the palate has that special SQN elevated balance , all parts of this orchestra are loud but also in harmony and balance. Big wine for sure but not heavy and with a charm and once again delicious. One can choose to hate it for what it stands but we prefer to just enjoy it and these non EBA SQNs remain for us a bit of a guilty pleasure. 96 and drink at will but time is on your side here.

Flight 4 - The Sweet Surrender (2 notes)

Red - Fortified
1940 Château Sisqueille Rivesaltes France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Rivesaltes
93 points
Kept in barrel till 2009 and the bottled at the domain by Marie Siqqueille and we think Farr Vintners bought the whole bottling.
Where does one begin to describe let alone rate such a wine. A forgotten style gladly brought back to life and such a treat. Light in color, definitely shows its age there but that's about it. Bright and spirited on the palate, energetic like a port but without the heavy ripe side. Medium weight and simply a joy. Solid 93 but could well be more! worth its money for sure.

Red - Fortified
2011 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
Decanted and served. Young but very much approachable. We don't drink that much port but the specific one albeit young felt very much approachable and granted showing only a glimpse of what this could evolve into still drinks very well now and you could not fault opening one at this young aged. Dark and dense, rich but in no way heavy, smooth on the edges even this young and in no way sharp or not giving. Lots of depth of flavor here and time in the cellar would definitely be its best friend,This has 50yrs of life in it at least...
