Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2017 Weszeli Terrafactum Grüner Veltliner Felix Austria, Niederösterreich
Tasted Blind

A: Pale lemon-green
N: Pear...quite a lot in fact. Lemon, grass, wet stone, bitterness of raw almond skin.
P: Dry, high acid, medium (+) alcohol (or thats what i perceived...it wasn't so high). medium body, medium (+) intensity and medium finish. Phenolic bitterness present. The wine seemed very neutral at first.
C: Drink now and Very good quality.

Guesses:
I guessed Old world as the wet slate was very apparent. I guessed it was Pinot Gris from Alsace.

Mistakes:
There was no hint of the copper that one SOMETIMES sees with PG. I missed the white flowers and chamomile that everyone else picked up. However, the absence of that RS that i always detect in Alsatian PG should have told me that this was not a PG from Alsace. I didn't detect the white pepper even long into the tasting. I did, however, eventually get the fresh cut JALAPENO that one associated with Gruner after about 30 mins of it opening up in the glass.
White
2015 Weingut Spreitzer Riesling Trocken Germany, Rheingau
Tasted Blind

A: Medium gold but the lighting in the bar is lousy
N: Pronounced intensity. White blossoms, wet slate, peach, apple, lime. honeysuckle. The fruit is ripe.
P: Dry, acid is medium (+) to high, medium (-) alcohol, medium (+) intensity and finish.
C: Can drink now but potential to improve with age. BLIC? Very Good Quality wine.

Guesses:
I pegged this as old world owing to the slate, At first, i thought that it might be a Viognier owing to the peach dominance but the acid seemed too high. I went to Riesling but guessed Austria. Why? Because i couldn't detect any RS

Mistakes:
German trocken is usually sweeter than this despite the name. This is one of the first times that i have had a german Riesling this dry and it was enjoyable but worth remembering that they are out there and might just upset the apple cart when deductive tasting.
Red
2015 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Tasted Blind

A: pale ruby
N: Medium (+) nose. Strawberry, red cherry, raspberry, violet, medicinal, black pepper, wet stone, juniper. Secondary notes of vanilla, clove and nutmeg. Tertiary aromas of mushroom, wet leaf and forest floor .
P: Dry, high acid, medium (+) tannin, medium (+) alcohol (14%) but well integrated, medium (+) body and pronounced intensity with long finish.
C: Can drink now but has potential to age. BLIC? Ticks all round. A really outstanding quality here.

Guesses:
I guessed old world as very earthy. Agh, the pepper put me in the rhone and the slightly lighter body made me think grenache based wine from southern rhone but the color was inconsistent. It aromas didn't support pinot noir or sangiovese but might have supported Nebbiolo as did the pale color. I went for Nebbiolo.

Mistakes:
There would have been a fuller body on Nebbiolo and the pepper wouldn't have been here. Lots of red fruit and florals yes, but the fruit condition would be riper and more stewed in a CDP.I just didn't analyze the fruit condition and gave too much credence to the color. Grenache is thin skinned and not got a lot of color intensity but thought the remainder of the blend would have rendered it much darker. A odd miss but i can at least see where i went wrong.
60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% other permitted varieties.
