Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2015 C. von Nell-Breuning Kaseler Dominikanerberg Riesling Dom Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasted Blind

A: Pale lemon-green
N: Apple, pear, white flowers, white peach, petrol, honeysuckle. Slate. Medium (+) nose.
P: Medium dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) intensity, body and finish. low alcohol (9.5%).
C: Length and intensity make it a good quality wine. I think the acid should be higher but the residual sugar may be masking it. Drink now.

Guesses:
Thought that this was a Riesling from the Off. My final guess was German Riesling from Mosel.
White
2017 Familia Zuccardi Torrontés Serie A Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta
Tasted Blind

A: Medium lemon green
N: Pronounced intensity. Rose, geranium, honeysuckle, orange blossom, Baking spice. Youthful
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, full body, pronounced intensity, medium (+) alcohol (14%), medium finish.
C: Good Quality wine. Drink now.

Guesses:
Recognized this right away as either gewurz or torrontes. The acid was getting up there and so was the alcohol and so landed on Torrontes, Salta, Argentina 2016 as a final guess.

Mistake:
Was a year out. Not too worried.

White
2015 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Tasted Blind

A: Medium lemon-green
N: Vanilla, peach, asian pear, yellow apple, butter, baking spice, hazelnuts Developing. Pronounced intensity.
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, full body, medium (+) alcohol , intensity and long finish. Delicious. Very good quality. Drink now or hold for greater complexity.

Guesses:
The fruit seemed so ripe that i assumed this was from a warmer climate. I thought the insane amounts of oak and the strong stone fruit aroma turned me to New World. I thought it could be a Chardonnay or a Viognier.

Mistakes:
The saltiness , i associated with the butter of the MLF rather than oyster shells. I imagine NW Viognier doesn't undergo MLF as it would kill the naturally low acid content.

2013 Azienda Agricola Le Fioraie di Michele Neri Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Tasted Blind

A: Deep garnet
N:Medium (-) intensity. black cherry, raspberry, cassis, white pepper, va. dried herbs
P: Dry, high acid, medium (+) tannin, medium (+) alcohol, medium (+) body, medium intensity, medium (+) finish.
C: Drink up. Good quality wine.

Guesses:
VA brought me to nebbiolo or sangiovese. I guessed this was Sangiovese as the tannin was not as rasping as i expect from a nebbiolo. Guessed chianti as opposed to brunello as didn't have the same mushroomy notes or the extra fruit, body and oak that Ian Cauble tells us to look for. Mind you, didn't get the tomato leaf and fennel typical of Chianti Classico either. Ha!

2004 Château Bernadotte France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Tasted blind

A: Deep garnet
N: Black cherry (dried), cassis (dried), coffee, earth green bell pepper, cedar, tobacco leaf. Oak present but integrated.Fully developed.
P: Dry , medium (+) acid, high tannin, medium alcohol (13%), full body, pronounced intensity and long finish.
C: Drink now (in next 3 years). I think this is Good to very good quality wine.

Guesses:
cassis, cigar/tobacco, bell pepper and oak and i was on the left bank of Bordeaux. Didn't know it was haut medoc, however. Guessed 2005. oops.Knew it had age owing to the garnet coloring and the dried nature of the fruit.

2015 Lapostolle Carménère Cuvée Alexandre Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley, Apalta
Tasted Blind

A: Deep purple
N: Medium (-) nose. Black cherry, green pepper, little dill, vanilla, coffee.
P: Dry, high acid, medium tannin, high alcohol, medium intensity, full body, medium (+) finish.
C: Drink now (within 3 years).

Guesses:
Cauble usually describes carmenere as ripe and unripe at the same time. Warm black fruit meets green capsicum and green peppercorn flavors. Also there was that espresso thing that Elliot pointed out as a marker for carmenere and so that was my final guess.
