The Kenwood, Mpls, MN

Tasted January 16, 2019 by rocknroller with 188 views

Introduction

The latest in the Heidi's group revisited series. Six of us got together at The Kenwood for a night with some outstanding Burgs. A great night of wines for sure and as always very fine food. Lots of standout wines tonight - that's for sure. The '02 Leroy took the prize though.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2014 Marie Courtin Champagne Resonance Extra Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This has a good burst of fruit up front; apple and cherry, then it turns yeasty on the back end with apple peel and minerals. The 100% pinot is fairly evident while the extra brut dosage goes relatively unnoticed. 90+ to 91pts.

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Boy, the last few bottles of this have just been killer. This has a lot of energy and lift, jumps across the palate, brilliant minerality, biscuit, white and green fruits, excellent breadth from start to finish. Love it. 93+pts.

Light gold color. Decanted for 2 hours. Drank a glass over an hour. Youthful yet very expressive. Oak, toasted oak, lemon, rich and full bodied, tons of mineral, deep and toasted, almost sweet fruit on the end, citrus and stones. Excellent length, another fantastic '14. 93(+)pts.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White
2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Medium plus gold color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. This was a total head turner, absolutely stunning. In perfect shape, the complexity is off the charts, every moment bringing another element. Wispy sea air nose, the minerals build and build, amazingly fresh, lemon. lemon oil, almond cream. The palate feels effortless, full bodied and vibrant with a beautiful panna cotta texture that glides across the tongue; ocean breeze minerality, dry stone, lemon, lemon oil, pear creme brulee. This is intense and deep and at the same time elegant and lively, mature and very, very long. Thrilled this was in great condition, loved it. Now I wish I had more. 96+pts.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2002 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
97 points
Murky dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Same bottle as BradE. This was a total wow wine, mesmerizing on all levels. What a nose, dried earth, potpourri, loam, soil, funky with some wonderful dank notes, dried flowers, red cherries and oh so lifted. A savory top note emerges later as well. The palate actually takes things to another level; earthy, red cherry, sour cherry, briary, nicely spiced with a floral sandalwood essesnce on a medium full bodied frame; seamless, and very long. In a word, brilliant. WOTN. 96+ to 97pts.
Red
2013 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. A bit funkier, rose petals, tart, darker fruits, dried wood, dried herbs, medium body, youthful, firmish tannins. 93+ to 94pts.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2006 Gros Frère et Sœur Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. I love this nose, great spices, earthy, floral, high toned, leather, dark red fruits. The palate is fairly consistent just a bit sharper on the tail end. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2006 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minnutes. Still tight, this has almost sweet black fruits on the nose, blackberry, black cherry, orange peel and spice box. The palate is a bit edgy, very spicy and peppery, bigger, dark red and juicy black fruits, astringent tannins. Opened pretty slowly, more to come. 91+ to 92pts.
Red
2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
95 points
Clear Deep ruby red color. Decanted for 2 hours, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Same bottle as BradE. Wow, deep and sultry, succulent dark berries, deeply spiced, very earthy, damp, leathery and woodsy. The palate is dark and a bit murky, evolving and still a little youthful, juicy dark red berries, savory, wood tones and a long velvety texture. Showing very well with the 2 hour decant and still geting better in the glass. Excellent. 94+ to 95pts.
