Ch. Montrose Dinner

Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong

Introduction

An interesting and enjoyable evening with the unusually shy winemaker. All bottles were from the Chateau and had been decanted 6 hours ahead of the dinner on the winemaker's instruction.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2002 La Dame de Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Nice nose, Needs time, Austere in the mouth. A touch of length. Well made but marred by mouthpuckering tannins.

Deep purple colour, dense and not translucent. Appealing but restrained nose. Tannic but refined structure. Very dry on the back end. Closed down for now and needs a lot of time.
Red
2004 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
88 points
Deep inpenetrable purple. Good nose of red fruits but quite closed. Nice oak in the mouth in a California style but crowded out by the tannins. The fruit hardly pokes through at all. Not much length. Hard to judge at this stage of its life.
Red
2003 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dense, alluring purple colour. Gorgeous welcoming nose of oak, good fruit and classic Bordeaux aromas but surprisingly forward for its age. Like the 2004. it has an interesting Californian way about it but remaining classically Bordeaux. On the mouth.....wow...tons of lovely fruit and already beautifully poised between fruit, tannin and oak. Lots of grip and rather closed, especially in terms of its potential length, but is already showing sufficient hints of its future greatness to mark high.
Red
1998 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Lighter colour. Moderate nose. Very light on the palate. Very, very light and rather tannic. Matured somewhat in the glass but doubt it will resolve into anything notable.
Red
1994 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Still a young deep colour. Unremarkable nose...but just restrained and good under the surface. Tart in the mouth but good length, strangely. A well made wine in a poor vintage?

Still young in colour. Fully mature and lovely nose....wonderful coffee aromas, lush fruits and some mushrooms. Dry tannins but not drying. Good fruit and length. Watery but really good. A fine wine despite it being the year of "the great frost". Apparently, most wineries lost 90% of their production but Montrose lost only 10% because of its proximity to the river.

Stunning. My WOTN. Lovely colour. Great nose. Wonderful balanced and absolutely classic Bordeaux. A bit too tannic and austere to be perfect but it got better with time in the glass, notwithstanding the 6 hour decant. Some "in your head" qualities and good length.

The change to a more Californian style from 2003 was noteworthy.
