Wining Around New York

Various Venues, New York

Introduction

These were some bottles and tastes that we were able to enjoy while we were not attending La Paulée Burgundy events. Those events are noted separately.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

Red
2000 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Light red but not watery. Beautiful mature sous bois, strawberry, and pomegranate right out of the bottle. Then, more high toned wintergreen and stems. Light to medium body, definitely delicate for Pommard, but nothing weak about it. Some tart acidity, little in way of tannin, good base of soil. This is no match for the bigger, more rugged vintages of this wine, but I really enjoyed it for what it was (i.e., lilting, fragrant, fully mature Burgundy) rather than criticizing it for what it is not.

White - Sparkling
2007 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Minéral Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Yellow with some remaining fizz. Just off dry, lemon zest, good acidity. This has more age than most examples of this cuvée I've tried and is not as bracing and, well, mineral as I recall and crave. Perhaps it's the mellowness of maturity, or maybe it's the vintage, but suffice it to say that while I enjoyed it, I've preferred bottles with more snap.
White - Off-dry
1990 Hohe Domkirche-Trier Avelsbacher Altenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Deep yellow/light golden. Fantastic mature Riesling aromas of petrol and stone fruit. Off dry, not sweet like most current Spätlese. Poised, superb palate feel despite light weight, outstanding acidity, and a rush of slate at the end. So, there you have it-another overperforming nearly 30 year old Riesling from an unheralded Mosel producer. Just amazing. One of the best wines we drank during our New York wine whirlwind.
Red
2007 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Muddled light red. This led with menthol, but after an hour or so, strawberry joined the aromatic party. Lithe, fine soil base, vibrant, delicate red fruit, excellent binding acidity, and fading tannins. Ah, Chambolle, and a good reminder not to overlook 2007's from good sources. Not profound, but totally seductive and satisfying.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2017 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
By the glass pour. Bright amber orange color. Honeyed citrus and more of an herbal streak than I'm used to in Loire Chenin Blanc. Very sweet and unctuous. Purer fruit in the mouth, adequate acidity, not terribly long. Interesting and good.
White
2010 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Light yellow. Reticent at first, then hay, flowers, and citrus-aromas unlike any other Sancerre. Medium weight, inimitable quininine and crushed stone through the mid-palate and finish. Grapefruit plus a more exotic fruit (guava?), brisk acidity though not as punishing as other younger vintages. Amazing length. A great, singular wine for its feel and flavor profile. Could easily see its 30th birthday in pristine shape.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Light golden. Clean, pure notes of apricot, quince, and apple jelly. No honey though. Typical full, mouth coating Chenin Blanc, only moderately sweet, good but not crazy acidity, and the typical Clos du Bourg soil finish. Truly a mellow, outstanding Moelleux, very pleasing but not overwhelming.
White - Sparkling
2006 Jacques Selosse Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Disgorged February, 2018. Deep tulip yellow. Few bubbles. Apple on the nose. Full and creamy, fresh, excellent but not gum rattling acidity. Over time in the decanter, mild oxidative notes, herbs, and an airier side. Fantastic depth and length, akin to a Grand Cru white Burgundy.
Red
1982 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
flawed
Light ruby. Minty fragrance and some gentle sweet fruit remaining. Alas, corked.
Red
1999 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Decanted about 4 hours earlier. Impressive even, primary ruby. Explosive black cherry and tobacco. Later, florals and potpourri. Amazing medium bodied glycerine texture from start to finish. Breathtaking sweetness and vivacity of the dark red fruit with light underlying minerality. Round, ripe tannins. Superb and entirely memorable. I'd estimate that it about halfway into its life span. What a magnificent wine this is!

Red
2010 Cappellano Barolo Pie Franco Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Opened last night, decanted prior to serving. Ruby mid-third, then tawny. Over the course of 2 hours, I think I smelled every element I have ever smelled in a Nebbiolo. Here goes-pine needles and tobacco, leather, plum, and brown spices. Suffice it to say that the aromas made us swoon with delight. Right out of the decanter, light, mineral, and grainy tannins that coated every inch of the mouth. It did not take long, however, for it to flesh out and show sappiness and ripe red/purple fruit to join the savory pieces. Splendid acidity and those tannins continued to reverberate. A great classic, and a truly emotional experience to try this icon, even if it is still 20 years away from anything resembling maturity. As much as we loved all of the Burgundy we drank this week, this wine and the ‘99 Conterno Cascina Francia last night left the most indelible, haunting impressions.

Closing

It seems as though you can still drink quite well in New York.
