Introduction

Long-overdue catch up with good friends at their house.

Flight 1 - Fresh Prawns, Avocado Salad (1 note)

White
2006 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Light silver gold colour. Lightly scented perfumed lemon balm nose. Hints of butterscotch with extended time in the glass. Palate is beautiful mouthfeel...rich melted butter but with balancing broken oyster shells minerality and an enhancing acidity. Then you get this heavy melted unsalted butter on the tongue as it gets to cool room temperature and that adds another dimension. High-heeled and elegant. Beautifully made. 92+

Flight 2 - USDA Prime Dry-Aged Rib-Eye & Sirloin with simple Steamed Asparagus and French Beans (2 notes)

Both simple-grilled steaks were superb and really complimented the wines.

Red
1982 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Decanted for 30 minutes. Transparent brightly jewelled ruby. Nose is classic sun-warmed cedar roof shingles, very bright and lifted red currant and gai-tze Chinese sweet mini dates fruit. It really opens out into classic Bordeaux third dimension with extended time. Palate is lovely melange of well-toned medium acidity segueing into gorgeous mature fresh red berry fruit. Slight elements of typical Calon Segur rusticity. No signs of over-maturity... is really right in its prime spot. The fruit really stands out here. It would pass for 1996. Gorgeous.

3-hour decant. Brand new looking cork. Deep red-purple opaque colour. BLAM.... the nose is awesome in its freshness, purity and linearity.... Lafite-like graphite elegance and razor precision. We are in 1st Growth territory here. Palate is the same alluring jewelled brightness and precision.... wow, it just stops you dead in your tracks, except this massive understated powerful growling resonance and reverberence even before the swallow. Gosh...the length goes on forever with a huge smile on your face. Endless length. Wow. 95+ even at this early beginnings of its drinking window. Has an easy 10 years to improve from here. Everyone's WOTN.

Flight 3 - French Artisanal Cheeses (1 note)

Red

Opened an hour before serving but not decanted. Transparent cherry-red colour. Reticent but very pure nose of rose water and raspberry with hints of sous bois. Palate is light but very pure... light raspberry, very high piano notes but no meat. Disappointing but definitely nothing wrong with the bottle. Fell way short of the Calon Segur ‘82 and Ridge Monte Bello 2001 drank alongside it. Might have been better on its own with a light white truffled mushroom pasta dish.... but that is giving it too much the benefit of the doubt. My conclusion is “overrated".

Closing

Really great friendship, conversation, food......and wines....as always.
