Introduction

A friend was coming into town who likes Napa Cabs. So we got together on a saturday with a few others to taste a interesting spectrum of Napa Cabs

Flight 1 - A whole lotta purple. (6 notes)

I tend to like aged wines, and this shows in my notes. The Concha y Toro was really an interesting wine. I hope they are still making these like that. The Ghost Horse was really tasty at first, but soon got tiring. Anyways, a great time for those that attended. I paired this with a lamb tagine.

Really nice, amazingly young for a 34 yr old wine. This was balanced, mostly black fruit and red fruit mix, herbal, earthy and complex. Tannins still have structure along with the acid. Really nice and enjoyable. A good wine that both Bordeaux and new world cab folks will love. Honestly, this should go 50 yrs if you have a good bottle.

Cedar and red fruit on the nose. Big fruity body, strong black current, light bitter with strong drying tannins and good acid. Pretty much still mostly primary. Overall it was a bit unbalanced towards the fruit for my palate and simple/linear. If I loved more extracted wines I would have rated this a bit higher.

Dusty red fruits on the nose, a hint of cedar. This had nice moderate fruit levels, but was a bit too one-dimensional. Never really opened up over 6 hrs. Tannins were pretty integrated, but no real tertiary mature notes appeared. Maybe it was the lower acidity. Very good wine, but again, people who like Napa cabs would rate this better than I did.

Interesting wine! A standout in a sea of Napa Cabs. Had a nice funky and stinky nose with great black fruit and a herbal note (amost a Loire Cab franc note.....awesome!). Color had some bricking. Taste had moderate black fruits, moderate tannins, and solid acidity. A very complex and interesting wine with earth, mint, bitter notes. Just really nice.

This was interesting....in a good and bad way. One first smelling and tasting this wine, your were floored by the robust, in-your-face wall of black current, plum and vanilla. Big fruity, brash with low tannins and very low perceived acidity. However, after a while, this became a chore to drink, just too big and chunky. Just not my style of wine and will overwhelm almost any food. I recognize that this a particular crafted "style", but it just was too much for even the modern extracted wines.

Wow, Gobsmacked with red fruits on the nose. This was mostly redfruited at this point, some light black fruits seeping in. This had the typical smooth low tannin, low acid hallmark of alot of Napa cabs. Again not my thing, but this is a well made wine and was reasonably balanced, but just not as complex as it could be.

Flight 2 - Dessert (1 note)

Since there wasnt alot of us, I pulled a Yquem to pair with an apple galette (with a little sweetened mascarpone underneath as my version of frangipone). A hot year, but still Yquem

Super buttery cream and vanilla with a hint of apricot on the nose. Beatifully sweet (too sweet?). Thick and unctuous, with light savory notes, some spicy bits, vanilla and apricot. Still super young. Its starting to soften, but its not yet getting caramel, burn sugar or toffee notes. Probably on a faster aging track due to the lower acidity. Still always a treat!

Very nice at this stage with fruit desserts with vanilla cream, apples, pears, etc.

Setting aside the Yquem, there was no clear favorite. It was split along the extraction preference lines. My favorites were 1. Dunn 2. Don Melchor, and 3. Caymus
