RPM Italian, Chicago, IL

Introduction

This was a dinner that I ended up being extremely lucky to make. I didn't know if it would happen and two days before I was told that they opened up a bunch of spots. Knowing that they would have Violante in house to talk through the wines made this a must attend.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2016 Donatella Cinelli Colombini Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

Nose: The nose has a nice bit of lift and perfume with crushed rocks, violets, red cherries, earth tones, licorice, and roasted herbs. There is a pleasant, savory backdrop though it lacks a slight bit of depth.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. There is excellent balance to the feel along with crushed rocks, violets, red cherries, licorice notes, and some roasted herbs.

Overall: This is a well balanced and fresh Rosso di Montalcino. There is a bit of crunch to the red fruits along with classic sangiovese savoriness that makes it drink perfectly right now.

Nose: The nose is coiled up a bit, but it opens up with a savory backdrop of licorice, sour red cherries, roasted herbs, earth notes, tobacco, leather, violets, rose petals, and some raspberries. Though it feels like it's holding back a slight bit, what is showing through right now is gorgeous.

Taste: The feel is Medium+ bodied with refreshing, medium+ acidity and chewy, high tannins. The structure is near overpowering right now, but beneath it is something elegant and savory with sour red cherries, roasted herbs, earth tones, tobacco, leather, violets, and raspberries.

Overall: This is a gorgeous, young Brunello that is showing all of the hallmarks of something special. The nose is on the tight side and the structure is certainly youthful, but everything underneath has a lot to like in 5+ years as it settles down.

Nose: The nose is aromatic, but with the fruits favoring a more baked quality with licorice, roasted herbs, raspberries, dark red cherries, violets, and tobacco notes. The tones are upfront and more towards the surface without much depth behind them.

Taste: Full bodied with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. The tannins are a bit stiff with licorice, roasted herbs, raspberries, violets, and tobacco notes.

Overall: This feels like it is right in its window. This a more upfront and brooding Brunello that doesn't truly show off the elegance of the grape.

Nose: The nose is expressive and mature, filled with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, balsamico notes, tobacco, licorice, roasted herbs, and rose petals. There is good depth and balance that shows off a lot of elegance.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky, resolved, medium tannins. The acidity is a little sharp and angular, but the feel is polished and balanced with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, earth tones, licorice, balsamico notes, and tobacco tones.

Overall: This is a beautifully mature Brunello. It feels like it's towards the end of its peak as there is a slight soy quality to the tones. Still, it is exactly what one wants from a mature Brunello as the expressive side is in full bloom along with a distinct savoriness.

Nose: The nose is complex, aromatic, and feminine, filled with violets, dust, dark red cherries, raspberries, licorice, red berries, leather, earth tones, and roasted herbs. There is excellent depth and elegance already at this nascent stage along with a real savoriness too.

Taste: The feel is Medium+ bodied with refreshing, medium+ acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is quite youthful and while the tannins are silky, they also possess good grip to let you know its young. Beneath the structure lies a gorgeous feel along with dust, earth tones, violets, dark red cherries, raspberris, licorice, savory notes, and roasted herbs.

Overall: Though this is an extremely young Brunello, it is also an outstanding one already. It can certainly benefit from a good 7+ years and it has plenty of stuffing to go 20+ years to fully show how special it can be.

Nose: Though the nose comes off as youthful and a slight bit tight, it is magnificent and poised with rose petals, violets, wild flowers, roasted herbs, red cherries, tobacco, earth notes, leather, raspberries, and strawberries. There is a lot of depth and savoriness to the nose while there is attractive lift to the fruit.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with fresh, medium+ acidity and chewy, high tannins. The structure is clearly youthful and the tannins are extremely powerful right now. Underneath the structure lies something extremely gorgeous with rose petals, wild flowers, red cherries, tobacco, earth tones, leather, and strawberries.

Overall: This is a painfully young, but all together stunning Brunello. It has loads of depth, elegance, and savoriness with the red fruits favoring the upper register. It certainly needs the better part of 7+ years to start to come into its own and it should have a long life in front of it.

Closing

This was one of the more enjoyable dinners that I have been to. It was great to taste the older vintages to see where the wines may go and to understand the change in styles. This was a bad night at all.
