Wednesday Night "Chardonnay" Blind Tasting

Miramonte Winery

Tasted October 2, 2019 by R2-D2 with 166 views

Introduction

Chardonnay blind tasting consisting of wines that match the regional requirements of the Somm 2 level - Chablis, Cotes de Beaune, Maconnais, Napa, Sonoma, and Central Coast CA. A Margaret River was included as it is a requirement for the WSET.

Flight 1 - Blind Chardonnay (6 notes)

An interesting presentation - six wines from a possible 7 regions. Wines were tasted and discussed as a group before reveal. Most of our group of six got the country of origin correct but few got actual regions correct. All of us believed the Margaret River Chardonnay to be a Chablis. The Macon-Villages was very interesting though not as intense as the Chablis Fourchaume.

Tasted blind. Lemond colored; Apple and stone fruits dominate the wine aromas and flavors. Loads of acidity along with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Guessed Sonoma.

Flight 2 - Double Blind (4 notes)

No one got the Vouvray correct. Though Chenin Blanc was a strong consideration.

White
2015 Domaine Roger Luquet Pouilly-Fuissé France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
flawed
Tasted double blind. May have been oxidized as the cork displayed signs of seepage and the aroma was of candied lemon peel, dried apricots and nuts. The palate was dominated by sourness and was nearly devoid of fruit.

NO GUESS.
White - Off-dry
2018 Famille Bougrier Vouvray "V" France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Guessed German Riesling Kabinett.

Red
2017 Mollydooker Shiraz The Boxer Australia, South Australia
88 points
Tasted Double blind. Dark purple/ruby color; Blueberry and cherry pie aromas explode out of the glass, followed by baking spices, roasted herbs and a stewed/jammy odor. The sticky red and black fruits coat the mouth. A bomb of flavor - stones, tar, espresso, jalapeno and black pepper. High tannin and high alcohol (16%).

Guessed Aussie Shiraz (blueberry aromas and black pepper finish)
