Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2014 Yangarra Estate GSM Estate Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
N: VERY slightly closed; Jamminess atop smoke/earth? Fragrant, but a BIT tough to parse

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt fairly quickly met by an astringent pucker which somewhat mitigates by the LONG, fairly tannic finish. NEEDS 'til '20 min, but seems to have EVERYTHING in place to be a potential steal down the line. 89 pts The Wine Front (Bennie) & 88 Decanter (Panel).
Red
2012 Kangarilla Road Shiraz Alluvial Fans Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
N: FRAGRANT with LASER-like focus; Lingonberry jam, rest tough to parse

P: Med, poss LM, body; NICE frt on front met by a VERY slight mid-P pucker which SLOWLY mitigates into a LONG, tangy finish. Lovely to drink right now, might improve over the next 6 mos, then drink through '19. A well made, DELIGHTFULLY balanced effort! 93 pts WA, 92 pts ea WE, James Halliday, & Australian Wine Review. Also, GenXY Wines tasted 369 Shirazes/Syrahs, this receiving 1/31 "Gold Medal Standard" ratings.

Note: 1st tasted on 1/28/17
Red
2013 Jim Barry Shiraz The McRae Wood Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
“100% estate grown Shiraz; FR oak; 14.0% ABV, 5.9g/L T.A., & 3.6 pH;”

N: FAIRLY fragrant jam/smoke, rest tough to parse; More to give?

P: Med, poss MF, body; LOVELY frt on front met by some astringent pucker which SLOWLY, seamlessly almost totally resolves by the end of the very LONG finish. DESERVES cellaring through '19, then drinking through '24 min. SUPERBLY made! 91 pts ea WA & WS (Worobiec, 4/12/17), 90 WE (Czerwinski, 4/1/17) @ $52, 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson (Jackson, 1/22/19), + other scores on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of late Feb '20, wine-searcher still shows several sources from $40-$55].

Addendum: Also tasted 6/17/17
Red
2014 McPherson Wines MWC Shiraz Mourvèdre Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria
93% Shiraz 5% Mourvedre, & 2% Viognier; 14% ABV

N: Earth atop jam with floral undertones?

P: Med, POSS LM, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which only somewhat resolves by the long, albeit very slightly faint, finish. Needs/DESERVES 12-18 mos, then drinking through '20 min. *Excellent* QPR @ the $11.95 tasting price! 92 pts Wine & Spirits (& 1 of their 100 Great Buys?), 90 pts James Halliday’s 2016 Wine Companion, + numerous medals in AU wine judgings.
Red
2013 John Duval Wines Shiraz Entity Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
“100% Shiraz sourced from old vyds in the Marananga, Eden Valley, Ebenezer, & Krondorf regions. Fermentation with submerged cap & small, open s/s fermenters; 100% barrel matured for 15 mos, with 35% new, fine grain, FR oak hogsheads (300 L), & the balance in 2, 3, & 4 yr old hogsheads; 14.5% ABV, 6.56 g/l T.A., & 3.49 pH;"

N: CLOSED; Jam atop smoke/earth?

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which only somewhat resolves by the LONG, very slightly tangy finish. An already elegant style that DESERVES cellaring into '19, then at least approaching its 10th? 92 pts WE (Czerwinski) @ $40, (probably [unable to confirm] 93 ea Vinous & WS, and 92 WA), + other scores/medals on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of late Feb '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $41.97].
Red
2013 Elderton Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa
N: CLOSED, but SEEMS ripe/deep

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker that slowly, fairly seamlessly, LARGELY resolves by the LONG finish which ult shows an almost swtish note. Cellar this gem into '19, then drink for the ff'ing 3 yrs, during which it should represent *excellent* QPR! 14.0% ABV; 94 pts James Halliday, 91 ea WA & The Wine Front, and 87 WS. [As of late Feb '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $21.98].
