Introduction

A weekend on the Costa Brava to celebrate Matts 50th

Flight 1 - Villa Mas (7 notes)

Lunch at Villa Mas. A set of shared seafood based starters and some salt baked fish. And that wine list 🔥

White - Fortified
N.V. Emilio Lustau (Almacenista) Manzanilla Pasada de Sanlucar 1/20 Manuel Cuevas Jurado Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda
Mid gold colour, really quite weighty and rich for a manzanilla but the depth of flavour and persistence was excellent, ticks all those zippy saline sherry boxes
White - Sparkling
2012 Raventós i Blanc De La Finca Spain, Cava
Fresh, some biscuit with a saline finish, great aperitif
White
2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Young but still so tasty, a bag of orchard fruits with juicy acidity and a long saline finish, I’d love to have a few of these to keep.
White
2010 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Quite rich and weightier than you’d think for its level, nuts and butter with a decent depth of fruit, fair acidity, great length, pretty stylish and in a good place right now

White
1993 Paul Chapelle & ses Filles Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
A recent release direct from the domaine. Phwoar! Proper old white burgundy. Rich but with great cut and acidity, so good with simple shellfish and salt baked fish
Red
1993 Domaine Regis Rossignol-Changarnier Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Another late release direct from the domaine. Developed and quite tertiary, some macerated cherry fruit left, decent enough but struggled with the company
Red
2011 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
So it’s really young, but in this vintage it’s ready now although there’s a way to go. the lovely red cherry fruit is so well defined now that it’s no crime to drink, there’s an earthy background hinting at what’s to come, good acidity. I really enjoyed this after a few oldies to wake the palate up

Flight 2 - 1970 - The year itself (8 notes)

Opening a few 1970’s - 50 years on

White - Sparkling
2013 Recaredo Corpinnat Recaredo Subtil Gran Reserva Brut Nature Spain, Catalunya, Corpinnat
Another lovely Recaredo wine, enough to set the scene for the wines to come, would like to spend more time with a bottle of this
Red
1970 Berry Bros. & Rudd Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Still plenty of red colour and bricked into the wine, fruit pastilles and evolved nose, still red fruit on the palate, ripe cherries and a touch of forest floor, good acidity, the finish is a little short, but aside from that it’s lovely
Red
1970 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tobacco, farmyard, fully tertiary nose, a bit of graphite, some fruit on the palate, austere and old school, alive but clearly on the downward slope

Red
1970 Château La Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Great colour, bricking into the wine, quite stinky and more farmyard, meaty, the palate is still quite plush with plenty of fruit along with the leather and meaty developed notes, lovely length and still fresh, delicious
Red
1970 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Royal Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Light body and bright colour, just a little bricking on the rim, leather and cherry, a bit of mature tobacco, the acid is very present and slightly sticking out now but a very fresh tasting wine for its age, if a little light and short
Red
1970 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Royal Tete de Cuvee Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
flawed
Somethings not right here, slightly maderised and pruney
Red
1970 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Some char and coffee on the nose on first pouring, leather and tobacco, all tertiary here, the palate is full of fruit still, quite rich, some texture leaves a little rasp on the tip of the tongue, you’d never guess this was 50 years old. Really excellent
Red
1970 La Rioja Alta Rioja Reserva 904 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Old leather and grandads potting shed on the nose, the palate is mouth filling and rich, it’s quintessential aged Rioja, sweet fruited, and perfectly developed, fresh and with great length, makes the Ardanza seem a little ordinary. Superb

Flight 3 - Other good cava that got drunk (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2011 Mestres Cava Visol Brut Nature Gran Reserva Spain, Cava
One of my favourite Cava cuvées, I find this a really vinous sparkler, ripe apples with a top note of lemon oil, really lovely and great value, in Spain at least
White - Sparkling
2010 Can Feixes Cava Brut Nature Gran Reserva Spain, Cava
I recall this was a good drink but the details fade a little in the weekends company
White - Sparkling
N.V. Mas Tinell Cava Brut Reserva Spain, Cava
One of many good Cava drunk this weekend...

Flight 4 - Granja Elena (1 note)

A great recommendation from Nick Lander/jr.com, excellent modern small plates, the raw mussel and sea urchin, tomato tartar with cured fish and soy and the revuelto (eggs) with truffle being highlights especially with this delicious sparkling wine, Corpinnat not Cava

White - Sparkling
2002 Gramona Corpinnat Paraje Calificado Estate Font De Jui Spain, Catalunya, Corpinnat
Drunk over lunch at Granja Elena, Barcelona. So much to like here, great cut, lovely depth of flavour with some fresh apples fruit, a touch of truffle and grilled bread, so complex and the finish is very long, an amazing wine to try, 3000 bottles made.
