San Diego Wine Co.

Tasted June 3, 2017 by srh with 81 views

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2015 Faisão Vinho Verde Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
Typically, “Arinto (40%), Trajadura (30%), & Loureiro (30%); Total destemming, pneumatic pressing, & alcoholic fermentation @ 59°F.” [“6.3 g/L T.A. & 3.12 pH” are the “typical” figures cited.]

TOO cold

N: CLOSED; Citrus (oranges?) & flowers?

P: Med, poss LM, body; Rndish entry with almost swtish frt nicely balanced by an acidity which leads into a lingering, pleasant finish. Drink now & over the next 6-9 mos, I'm guessing. 10% ABV; [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $8.50].
Rosé
2016 Rabble Wine Company Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
WAY too cold

Likely from their “Mossfire Ranch, planted in 1996 on steep hillsides & a rolling valley with 40◦ diurnal shifts;”

N: Fragrant grapes/flowers, minerals poss WAY underneath?

P: Med body; Rndish entry with nice frt balanced by an acidity which transitions into a LONG, VERY slightly swt finish with an annoying, slight bitterness on the end. Mediocre @ best. :( 12.6% ABV; 88 pts WE (11/1/17) @ $15. [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher shows no sources for this vintage]
White
2015 Hānaiali'I Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
WAY too cold

N: Closed, but at least SOMEWHAT reminding me of Meursault with its aromas of smoke/oak?

P: Med, poss MF, body; Rndish entry with initial notes of oaky harshness that at least partially resolve by the long, somewhat bitterish finish. Not by preferred style with respect to its emphasis upon oak. :( 14.5% ABV
Red
2014 Scarpetta Wines Frico Rosso Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
N: Slightly closed, but seems ripe, smoky

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which works its way into a LONG (albeit VERY slightly faint) finish with just a HINT of swtness on the very end. For now & through '19, I'm guessing. All things considered, impressive QPR @ the tasted $6.99! 13% ABV; [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 4 sources @ $9-$12].
Red
2014 CrossBarn (Paul Hobbs) Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
N: Forest floor/toast slightly atop cherries

P: Med body; Almost swtish frt met by SOME astringent pucker which pretty much irons itself out by the LONG, very slightly spicy finish with glimpses of swtness from time to time. VERY nicely made for drinking now & into '20, + MIGHT still improve a tad. 92, 89, & 88 pts winealign.com , 90-92 WA, 90 Decanter (Panel), + 2 scores & 2 medals on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $34].

N: VERY slightly closed; RIPE, jammy berries with earthy undertones

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by just a touch of astringent pucker which SEAMLESSLY transitions into a LONG, very pleasant finish. LOVELY stuff for drinking through '19, POSS longer. 90 pts WS & their #55/Top 100 for ’16 @ $19, + 88 (2x) winealign.com . 14% ABV; [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $16 & $20].
Red
2014 Bodegas Atalaya Almansa Laya Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa
70% Alicante Bouschet, 30% Mourvedre; 14.5% ABV

N: Closed, but seems ripe; Intensity lurking?

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which morphs into a surprisingly LONG, ult almost swtish finish. Should drink SUPERBLY through '19 min, + might even improve over the next 6-9 mos. 89 (2x) & 88 pts winealign.com , + 3 scores & 1 medal on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $8].

2014 Evans & Tate Shiraz Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
N: Dusty, earthy

P: LM body; Almost swtish frt met by a SMALL amount of astringent pucker which evolves into a fairly LONG, spicy, tangy/swt finish for drinking now & into '20? Nice QPR @ the tasted $9.99. 13.5% ABV; [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher shows no sources for this vintage]
Red
2012 Edward Lane Wines Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
N: RIPE berries with undertones of choc

P: Med, poss MF, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent PUCKER which SOMEWHAT irons itself out by the LONG, dustily tannic finish. Still needs several yrs, but would seem to have the frt for such. [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher shows no sources for this vintage]

Addendum: Also tasted on 12/16/17
Red
2015 Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel USA, California
From the winery's site: "The fulcrum of the wine is based around three old vineyards we farm in Sonoma County: Bedrock (1888), Nervo (1896), and Sodini Ranch (1905), along with a healthy dollop from the gorgeous Esola Vineyard in Amador County. The wine also has tasty morsels from Pagani Ranch, Evangelho, Pato, Papera Ranch, Teldeschi, Dolinsek Ranch, Carlisle, York Creek, and others. With the average vine age over 80 years, this is some legit old vine goodness. The 2015 is 90% Zinfandel, with the remainder made up of Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache, Carignan, Mataro, and various other mixed varieties found interplanted in these old vineyards."

N: Jammy blk berries with earthy undertones

P: MF, poss Med, body; Almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which SOMEWHAT resolves by the fairly LONG, slightly spicy/tangy finish. SEEMS to have what it takes for the 2+ yrs of cellaring it would SEEM to need. 14.2% ABV; 93 pts, a "Smart Buy" @ $25, & #12/Top 100 for '17 WS, 90 pts WA, & 16/20 Jancis Robinson (Hemming). [As of early Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $29 & $38].
