Not bad. Hard to believe I last had this 12 years back. It has certainly developed, but I am not sure it has really improved all that much. The nose was a lot more tertiary, with earth, sous bois notes, some meat, and then a linger of red fruit, spice and mineral. A rather funky, very masculine bouquet. The palate seems to have tightened and clenched up over the years, showing cool but reserved flavours of black cherries and dark berries, again seasoned with a dash or spice, bramble and a little mineral at the finish. I liked the bright 2001 freshness to this, and there was a certain sinewy power to it, but this was a bit stingy at points - hard to figure out whether it was tired, or just tight, especially given that it was opened many hours before serving. Overall, not bad, but not great.

2004 Domaine Robert Jayer-Gilles Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

A bit tired, but there was enough in here to still give some pleasure. The nose was a little melange of sweet yellow fruit with mature notes of butterscotch and spice. The fruit character was dryer on the palate, with more kumquats and citrus peel drifting over a bed of chalky mineral, again with that caramelly butterscotch character, and a touch of wood spice running behind. Still fairly brightly balanced on the attack, but this did seem as though it was flattening out past the midpalate. This was not bad though; an old school Burg, crafted in a rustic style, but with a bit of charm on it.
White - Sparkling
2002 R. & L. Legras Champagne Blanc de Blancs Evanescence France, Champagne

A really pleasant, deliciously balanced Champagne - with some upside yet, but it was quite a delight to drink even now. The nose had a bit of an oxidative character, with browned apples and pairs touched with yeast, mineral and a squeeze of citrus lime pips. The palate struck a rather different tone though - there was a nice rich depth and a tremendous sense of energy and length to it, but I was most impressed by was the detail and precision of it all, with a laser-like cut to its mouthwatering flavours of green apples, lemons and lime zest, this zooming into a long, zesty, minerally finish; all this couched in a very fine mousse and plenty of bright acidity. Lovely with the dim sum we had today, but I can see this improving over the 5-6 years and beyond.
Red
1992 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
90 points
Really youthful, even backward for 1992 Bordeaux - this was surprisingly good. The nose was classic left-bank and quite attractive, with sweet cassis notes infused with plenty of tobacco, tea leaves and cedar. The palate was still shaped with fresh acidity and a good bit of fine tannins, and had a surprising amount of cassis fruit - this really did not drink like an old Bordeaux from a weak vintage. The finish was decent too, with that same trail of spice, earth and tobacco on the backpalate.
