Introduction

Zoom blinds set up by Rob Pavlovich

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2008 Jean Vesselle Coteaux Champenois Grand Cru France, Champagne, Coteaux Champenois
Double blind. Cherries on the nose, massive acidity on the palate, with lean fruit. Felt a touch of iron, which made me think of a very lean Volnay - wasn't considering Coteaux Champenois, but makes sense. A wine that's much better with food, though I continue to think Coteaux are overpriced for what they are. Solid.
Red
2013 Edmond Cornu & Fils Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Moutottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
Double blind. Second wine, this one is massively different. Very big nose, with a touch of oak and a bit of spice. Good fruit on the palate, with very well integrated oak (there's a touch of oak, but it's clearly on its way to integration). This is a broad wine, but in a good sense - this is fruit handled well, with delicate extraction and no heat. This isn't complex enough for a gran cru, but shows signs of very good winemaking. Reminded me of Mugneret Gibourg villages or 1er, and the spice made me guess an Vosne side NSG. May have to see this out - the clear wine of the flight.

Red
2013 Escarpment Pinot Noir Kupe New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Blind, third wine. Extracted on the nose and then on the front palate....and then the chocolate hits on the finish. Why is there chocolate in my pinot? Oof. This is not my thing. I called this as one of the two non-Burgundy ringers (though #1 was also a ringer, but from champagne). This may be a style of Pinot others prefer, but I can't get over the oak and chocolate, which I have trouble enough with in cab.

Red
2017 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin 1er Cru Les Arvelets France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru
Blind, wine 4. I thought this was an older wine. This had huge cherry notes - good acidity, decent tannin. More cherry on the finish, though not as much as on wine 1. I don't recall what I called this, but the reveal was a huge surprise. Nice wine.
Red
2012 Felton Road Pinot Noir Block 3 New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Blind, #5. More extraction, oak, chocolate. Blech. Identified as the other ringer. Someone picked up green on this, though I did not.

Red
2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Blind, #6. The nose wasn't giving much. On the palate, this is very well balanced, with medium acidity and medium tannin, so likely a bit older. The balance on this is excellent, but it's just not terribly exciting. Solid fruit, mostly in the darker specturm. I thought this was a Morey from a lighter vintage, though this isn't terribly surprising. To me, the second best wine of the flight, but this faded pretty badly on day 2.

Closing

A fun trip through some parts of Burgundy I maybe don't spend enough time in (and confirmation that pinot might not be the reason to go to New Zealand).
