Flight 1 - 3 Different Producers (3 notes)

White
2016 Josef Chromy Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley
85 points
pH: 3.16; TA: 8.37. all-new oak with 1/3rd new French, Alc: 13.5.
light yellow colour. The nose of gentle yellow fruits, soft peachy fruit, cut grapefruit, mineral but more stone fruits than expected. the palate delivers a sharp almost rapier acidity, white melon, yet has an evolved element of almond paste to it. The wine shows a good balance of sherbet acid against some Galia melon with a touch of mouthcoating lees on the finish and for me a tad of RS? Very drinkable now.
White
2013 Hardys Chardonnay Eileen Hardy Australia, Tasmania
88 points
13.5% alc; pH: 3.16, TA: 6.6; 50% new French oak. Mid yellow, ripe fruit on the nose, a quite distinct peach flesh with nectarine and yellow apple. Fairly intense with a Burgundy feel of oatmeal and lick of vanilla. On the palate there is a distinct chalk note yet richness to the texture, feels warmer than expected, good concentration with spicy oak wood, generous almost. It does seem fairly oaky, yet an elegant version of the Chromy that went before. Apart from the riper fruit this also has flint notes, accompanied with white stone fruit, white chocolate and marzipan and a long length.
White
2015 Dawson & James Chardonnay Island Belle Meadowbank Vineyard Tasmania Australia, Tasmania
92 points
From the northern end of the Derwent Valley, 40% new oak; 12.2% alc. Mid yellow with ripe stone fruit, pineapple, picked apples in a basket and dry chalk powder. the palate has a notably high (piercing) acidity with the freshness of flavour and a long pithy finish. Fairly bold as wine and well-balanced fruit and acid. The flavours unfold to citrus, yellow peach and vanilla with plenty of oak spices. Very smart wine, the acidity holding all else together to a super long finish.

Flight 2 - 3 Wines Dalrymple Estate - Pipers River (3 notes)

White
2011 Dalrymple Vineyards Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River
84 points
Mid yellow. A touch of development with bruised apple (terpene); slightly Chablis in style. The palate has razor-sharp acidity, beautiful poise and focus, but supported by a wealth of ripe apple-orientated fruit, and a twang of lemon. There is a slightly phenolic note on the finish and it finishes reasonably quickly.
White
2010 Dalrymple Vineyards Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River
87 points
light yellow with a nose of delicate apple blossom, floral notes, again Chablis overtones. Lovely softness on the mid-palate with bright acidity, gentle spicy elements, cinnamon and white peach. For me, it lacked a bit of stuffing and was rather simple but fresh and cleansing.
White
2013 Dalrymple Vineyards Chardonnay Cave Block Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River
91 points
pH: 3.10; TA: 6.7; All french oak, but no mention of new wood, all barrel-rolled not stirred.
Light+ yellow. Plenty of fruit on the nose, floral, white oriented fruit and even a bit of oyster shell. There is focus and intensity with some soft richness in the mid-palate. Complementing this is a strident, quick acidity. Delicacy, perhaps erring towards a base wine without the real weight in the mid-palate but overall I enjoyed it. There is a furtiveness about the wine with a wonderful balance, positive pithy notes on the finish accompanied by a caramel note and long length.

Flight 3 - 2 Wines - Coal river Valley (2 notes)

White
2013 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
93 points
Owned by Shaw and Smith, M3 Vineyards. Alc: 12.5%; 13 months in new french oak, whole bunch pressed; small portion through MLF.
Mid yellow, engaging nose with plenty going on: picked apples kept in a container, stone fruit, hints of mint, (kakebos). The palate has masses of fresh yet "just" ripe fruit, piercing acidity, well-defined structure, tremendous intensity of flavour with an unexpected softness in the mid-palate. Great length, perhaps lean, perhaps austere but right up my street.
White
2016 Stargazer Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
94 points
Mid- yellow colour, the nose sings with lemon and peach blossom, delicate toasty aromas and vanilla. There is something exotic about the nose that draws you in. The palate reflects with an elegant frame, chalky, edgy acidity, and long undulating length. The fruit is concentrated and complex with charcoal, lemon, oyster shell, chalk and chopped stone. Arguably a statement wine and perhaps quite oaked but the pithy lemon texture and weight made it the wine of the evening.
