1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
100 points
ID 215027, “received its cork spring 2015”, released 2018. An individual batch of 200 (!) bottles. Original disgorgement, aged in the cellars at Krug until release, recorked in 2015. Pale golden colour, youthful for age, gentle but perfectly lively mousse; the most amazing nose, fresh and incredibly complex, so layered and deep and fragrant, rich but pure and precise, white walnuts and spiced honey and citrus fruit and flowers, only a hint of mushroom - pointless to offer individual descriptors; the palate has the elegant, minerally core of the terroir and the bright and lively acidity of the vintage, wonderful seamless freshness at 32 years of age, very youthful, gentle bitters; crème patissière on the complete, very long and layered finish that keeps on going. An effortless masterpiece with decades ahead of it.

Pale golden colour with green reflections, intense but lively and youthful; impressive nose, honeyed but fresh, chalky minerality, ripe fruit (with a surprising tropical edge), fresh nuts and savoury oak; intense and energetic palate, firm acidity and gentle bitters, salty Chablis-like salinity, wonderfully zesty and youthful citrus flavours, creamy texture; excellent resonance and length. Completely classical, comes across as a wine ten years its junior. Wow. Perfect now but good future.

From a 1ha parcel at 1,000 metres a.s.l., chalk and quartz soils, 80 year old vines, southern exposure, whole cluster fermentation, 60 day maceration, aged for 16 months in 500 litre barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered, with 1,725 bottles produced. Extremely pale colour, not much deeper than a rosado; fabulously fragrant nose, super refined, fresh and floral like a Riesling, spicy slate and orange blossom, rosehip, the pepperiness of kalamansi; the palate is light as a feather, seamless but with palpable minerality, fresh but intense, with firm but finely grained tannins; extremely long and delicately honeyed finish. A work of art.
