Introduction

I invited Frank over to have a look at a few vintages of Prieure Lichine (and to drop back some of the CndP's from Sunday)

Flight 1 - Prieure Lichine (10 notes)

What a lot of fun...the 83 was probably the stand out from these wines on the night.

Red
2011 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Cherry, slight plum, polished oak, cream, a smidge of blackcurrant, medium plus intensity acidity, wetly juicy with brambles and wild plums, a little oak underpin, slightly grainy tannic burr. it finishes quite savoury with a slightly green note that lends a little toughness. Nice.
Red
2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of a little baked fruit initially though with time a touch of jubey red currant, baked plums and a little Ribena. in the mouth the wine has medium plus intensity acidity and medium plus intensity flavours of blackcurrant jam. Tight, grainy, chalky tannins and alcohol warmth lends spiciness to the finish. This is still quite primary; time required but shows promise.
Red
2005 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Leather, blackcurrant, sweet spcie, a little plum, pretty, jubey cherry and, with time, earth and cigar box. Juicy acidity, wild blackcurrant and plum, muted spice, chewy tannins close things down on the palate a little. Alcohol warmth on the finish is non-intrusive. a little forward, perhaps, but nice.
Red
2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Baked black fruit tends to blackcurrant and currants, leather, sweet spices and a slight metallic note as well as a smidge of volatility. In the mouth the wine has medium plus intensity acidity, tight, drying, grainy tannins, a little leather and raisins. it's a touch dried out. Hmm.
Red
2001 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Brambles, blackcurrants, slightly meaty charcuterie notes, leather, the beginnings of Autumn leaves, mushrooms, there is a prettiness to the fruit here as well. Brambly fruit on the palate as well, wetly enjoyable with grainy tannins sitting nicely in the mix and a little cherry on the long finish. Nice.
Red
1996 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Meaty - Bovril in fact - savoury, plums, sweet spice, a little pepper and salami, very slight blackcurrant with time a little red currant and smoky firework notes. In the mouth it's similar; savoury, meaty with plenty of tannins, a little black fruit begins to peek through with time. I think a good decant will sort this one right out.
Red
1983 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. A hint of baked bread crust, leather, muted black fruits, dried orange peel, a little savoury spice meat, umami, tiny smidge of volatility and smoky notes, with time it gets positively fruit lozenge. Juicy acidity is almost citric on the palate offering orange flavours, fleshy, tannins still presents , flour textured and in harmony with the black fruits and all travel very long. Crikey, this is good.
Red
1981 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Biscuit, slight toast, raspberries and strawberries, baking spices, graphite, pencil shavings, cream and leather. Sourly juicy on the palate, a little bitter coffee note, raspberry fruit, still plenty of grip on the mid palate and the baking spices make themselves known on the long finish. Yum.
Red
1978 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Wonderfully shitty! Very barnyard indeed. Under this toast, biscuit, a little raisined red fruit, sweet spice, polished leather and a slight metallic note that encroaches with time. It has juicy acidity, more than a touch of farmyard, red fruits, leather, earth, mushroom, alcohol lends a gentle warmth to the finish. Tannins are near fully resolved. Lovely.

1966 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
flawed
Herbaceous, wood glue, leather, something like the sweet smell of decay. Dead. FLAW.

Flight 2 - with supper (2 notes)

Frank had tapped about half the Chasse Spleen so we popped the top off it and Coravined the La Croix Canon to have with duck breast and puy lentils...

Red
2000 Château La Croix Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Canon-Fronsac
From Coravin. Plums, a little toast, slight salines notes, a little sweet spice & slight alcohol warmth. In the mouth the wine has talc textured tannins, plummy fruits, those tannins grip and grab on the finish with a little alcohol warmth. Simple but effective and not really showing its age. Nice enough.

2000 Château Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
New oak, blackcurrant, blackcherry and plums, sweet spice, toast, leather. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy similar fruit profile to the nose with that sweet spice underpin. Talc textured tannins. A little sour aniseed note on the finish. Hmm.

Flight 3 - with cheese (2 notes)

Went a little 'off-piste' with these two youthful piedmont offerings...

Red
2018 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
From Coravin. dried flowers and dried citrus peel a little cherry, red plum and black tea. In the mouth it has juicy acidity that is almost a little volatile, plenty of drying tannin that is at once both rustic and pleasing. I need a joint of meat!
Red
2016 Moccagatta Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
From Coravin. plums, raisins, sweet spice, red currant and a little wood glue. That wood glue translate to the palate with plentiful flour textured tannins, plums and alcohol warmth intrude on the finish. Meh.

Pity about the 66...other than that a lovely evening...
