White - Sparkling
1996 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne

Very good stuff -- and probably tasting just a bit older than a 2008 of the same wine a month and a half ago. There are some nutty qualities here; you get a good amount of hazelnut on the palate, but the acidity and (slightly browning) fruit are still lively and vibrant. I may have to admit to some skepticism regarding the low-sulphur regime at Bollinger, as this bottle was drinking just fine.

2018 Walter Scott Chardonnay X-Novo Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

A good wine, but nowhere at the level that the hype machine is building this up to be. The nose has a fair amount of reduction, and shows an intense flinty, smoking element. On the palate, this has a surprising mix of fatness and acidity, and the oak feels a little bit too prominent. Maybe this will be better with time?

2015 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Yep, another example of 2015 white Burgundy just drinking so well right now. A hint of oak on the nose and palate, which melds in very nicely with the other elements here. Yes, this is ripe, but the ripeness seems to be confined by the steely minerality on the palate. Very convincing stuff; I may well need to start getting back into Drouhin whites.

2015 Domaine Comte Abbatucci Cuvée Collection Il Cavaliere Diplomate d'Empire France, Corsica

Just don't get this wine at all -- it's starkly aromatic with things that evoke viognier and gewürztraminer (which along with sauvignon blanc probably make the unholy trinity of white grapes) -- and is oily on the palate without enough acidity. Some aldehydic bitterness as well. Not my cup of tea.

1989 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Not as good as the first bottle of this I opened, but still definitely comfortably within the echelons of superlative wines. Initially a little stinky and funky, this blooms with air to show more and more intense smoky and meaty aromatics. The palate doesn't have the concentration and weight of the 1999 or even the 2004 we had alongside but there was an elegance to the red fruit and taut acids that were amply pleasing. A phenomenal wine beyond a shadow of a doubt.

This was my favourite of the 89-99-04 trio today. It seems ready to drink, even though there are undoubtedly more miles left in the tank. The nose is an intoxicating mix of fruit and blood, with more dark fruited character than the 1989. The palate is silky and sweet, and there is a breadth here that the other two vintages didn't quite meet. Very intense and powerful, I look forward to revisiting this wine in the future.

2004 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

A brilliant wine in what I consider one of the best vintages for drinking now in the northern Rhône. This wine shows a mild herbal tinge and a lithe elegance that seems to epitomize the vintage, at least for me. Surprisingly, this may be a little darker-fruited than the other two bottles of Hermitage today (89 and 99), but there is no mistaking the racy elegance here. Some thought it youthful, and while I would agree with that assessment, I think it is amply adequate for drinking and full enjoyment now.

2012 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Pretty much as I remembered it from earlier this year. This isn't the sappiest and richest of Rinaldi wines, likely owing to the vintage, but there is a beauty to the light red fruit here that is lovely. It's fruit-driven and while there is a tannic core underneath that fruit, this is surprisingly accessible for young Barolo. Lovely stuff, as I've come to expect from Rinaldi.

Beer
2013 Goose Island Matilda USA, Illinois
I got to this a little later in the day so by then unfortunately most of the fizz had dissipated. The nose has some malty grain flavours as well as a slightly bitter herbal tinge presumably from the hops. The palate's pretty consistent, with an added maillard-inflected brown sugar note. Again, there's that 甘 sort of taste that blends sweet and bitter together in a slightly medicinal way.
