My Birthday Weekend
Chicagoland IL
Tasted October 23, 2020 - October 25, 2020 by Burgundy Al with 178 views
Introduction
It’s great having a birthday on a weekend. Four different types of events.
Flight 1 - Dinner at RPM Steak (3 notes)
White
2011 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet
94 points
Popped-and-poured. Floral start with broad array of apple aromas, followed by similar flavors with very good depth, dancing textures and enough ripeness. Wine opened and expanded with more time in glass, really showing intense Grand Cru density after open 30-45 minutes. Best when finished at the 3-hour mark. I haven’t had this since visiting Niellon in 2013, shortly before this wine was released. It was the last wine I tasted that week in Burgundy; it was memorable then, and lived up to those memories tonight.

Red
1989 Château Palmer
96 points
Complex array of black plum, black cherry and boysenberry aromas with cigar box and faint mushroom hints. Palate is equally robust and even slightly fresher and brighter with perfect balance. Another great bottle of this wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance

Fresh and dried apricot with tropical hints. Very good depth and weight with equally impressive balance. So good now with a long life going forward.

Flight 2 - Wine with Great Home Cooking (3 notes)
White - Sparkling
2015 Raventós i Blanc De La Finca
87 points
Lemon, lemon peel and lime aromas with faint floral hints. Same flavors with minerally textures, but almost achingly bone dry.
White
1997 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune
93 points
Intensely rich aromatic start with lots of apple and floral charm alongside so much of that a Riesling “petrol.” Almost as exciting on the palate with good+ depth and length, with even better weight. Previous bottles were slightly more complete and complex, but this was still very good.
Red
1996 Louis Jadot Musigny
92 points
Lots of red cherry and berry, nicely mature with a good amount of cooked mushroom and earth. Good+ depth and weight, even if not quite up to the level of a great Musigny from a very good vintage.
Flight 3 - Sunday BBQ (2 notes)
White
2012 Château des Quarts Pouilly-Fuissé Clos de Quarts
90 points
Ripe apple and pear start-to-finish with very good concentration throughout. Long, minerally finish is particularly fresh. No hurry to drink up. Great value wine.
Red
2016 Xavier Vignon Lirac
88 points
Ripe black plum and cherry with good weight and balance. Very easy to enjoy right now.
Flight 4 - Wine in an Outdoor Igloo in the ‘burbs (6 notes)
Rosé - Sparkling
1990 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Brut Rosé
90 points
Good depth with both berry and orchard fruit character, slightly more earthy than great bottles I enjoyed 5-10 years ago, but still vibrant enough and very enjoyable. Time to drink up.
White
2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières
96 points
Clearly reduced start with powerful intensity, concentrated floral ans orchard fruit throughout and a very long, persistent and energetic finish. Served to me double blind, I immediately thought it to be from Coche-Dury, based on intensity and matchstick reduction. When told it wasn’t Coche, but was Meursault, I immediately thought it was Roulot Perrièrres. Great now through the next 5-8-ish years.
Red
1962 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Château de la Maltroye Rouge
92 points
Popped-and-poured. Fully mature black cherry with sweet notes, plenty of slowly reduced mushroom, finishing with layers of complex and unfolding nuance. Very good weight and shockingly fresh for its age. So fun and interesting. Great fill, great color for this bottle purchased in Burgundy in 2019 with impeccable provenance.
Red
1996 Louis Jadot Richebourg
95 points
Lots of red fruit start-to-finish are maturing gracefully, supported with savory spice, braised meat and elegant structure in the near background. Very good concentration, with even greater harmony and balance.

Red
1998 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg
94 points
Open an hour+ before serving. Lots of black and red cherry with very savory spice. Good depth and complexity, but this wasn’t quite as harmonious and perfectly balanced as a few previous bottles. Needed more air?

2003 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg
93 points
Also served double blind, this was clearly of Grand Cru pedigree with elegant Vosne stylings, but with some rugged elements that almost seemed bitter on the finish. Not quite as seamless as the previous bottles of Richebourg that evening. Also oddly lean for a 2003, but clearly built to last. Still very dense and enjoyable, although I’ve previously enjoyed other bottles of this wine more.
